Job Title: Graduate Nurse / Newly Licensed RN – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU) Internship
Job Summary
This is a 6-month internship program designed to prepare new Graduate Nurses for an RN position within the Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU) at Michigan Medicine. The orientation combines both classroom instruction and hands-on precepted clinical experience.
- Post-Internship Commitment: A two-year commitment to the PCTU is required upon successful completion of the internship.
- Minimum Hours: A minimum of 36 hours/week is required after the internship.
- Shift Assignment (Post-Internship): Shift assignments will be Nights, including 8 and 12-hour shifts.
- Start Date: Positions will have a start date of March 12, 2026.

Responsibilities
The Pediatric Cardio-thoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTU) is a 20-bed tertiary care center serving state, regional, national, and international patients. The unit specializes in the medical and surgical care of infants, children, adolescents, and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. The core philosophy emphasizes family-centered care, empowering families to participate in decision-making and care.
PCTU nurses provide exemplary care in a technology-intensive environment, which includes the use of advanced equipment such as ECMO, CRRT, and VAD’s. Key responsibilities include:
- Performing complex physiologic patient assessments in a high-intensity environment.
- Caring for high acuity patients with rapidly changing status.
- Managing patients undergoing the most progressive surgical and catheterization interventions.
- Practicing in close partnership with cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and fellows.
- Providing individual support and education to families and patients throughout their intensive care unit admission.

- Hourly Range for Registered Nurses: $41.78 – $64.81/hour
- Shift Differentials:
- Evening Shift: $3.00/hour
- Night Shift: $4.00/hour
- Day Shift Weekend: $2.90/hour
- Evening Shift Weekend: $5.90/hour
- Night Shift Weekend: $6.90/hour
- Charge Nurse: $1.00/hour

Salary & Nursing Framework Level
This UMPNC RN posting is initially posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework Level and salary will be determined at the time of hire, ranging from Level A to Level F.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following qualifications to be interviewed and considered:
- MUST be able to start on March 12, 2026.
- Must be a Graduate Nurse or a Newly Licensed RN who has not previously practiced as an RN.
- Applicant must have successfully completed an accredited BSN program.
- Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date.
- PALS certification is required (or within six (6) months of date of hire), or MUST be completed prior to the end of the probationary period.
RESUME REQUIRED: A complete and accurate resume must be attached for full consideration.
Desired Qualifications
Candidates with the following qualifications are preferred:
- Student nurse clinical experience in a PCTU.
- Experience as an extern or ICU tech in a PCTU.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
- Highly motivated and organized.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Takes initiative in seeking professional growth.
- Demonstrates expertise in communication and problem-solving skills (as evidenced by interviews, documentation, writing skills, and references).
- Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Work Schedule
- Hours per week: 36
- Shift/Hours/Days: Night shift, 8 & 12-hour shifts; Monday through Friday and rotating weekends.
- Location: Mott Children’s Hospital – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU)
- Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
Modes of Work
Eligibility for hybrid or mobile/remote work is at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually and subject to change.
