Shade Canyon School is a new public charter school using the principles of Public Waldorf education and located in Kelseyville, California. The school opened in September 2023 and currently serves 65 students in grades TK-3rd. The expected enrollment for the 2025-26 school year is 95 students in grades TK-4.

Job Description

Shade Canyon School is seeking a dedicated teacher who brings warmth, a nurturing presence, and a deep understanding of child development, along with strong classroom management skills rooted in rhythm, consistency, and compassion. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to fostering a healthy social environment, cultivating a love of learning through developmentally appropriate practices, and working collaboratively with colleagues, families, and the wider school community. This is a full-time position offering a competitive salary.

As a founding faculty member, the grade teacher will help shape Shade Canyon’s school culture. The teacher’s mission is to provide each student with a caring and stimulating learning environment that will cultivate emotional intelligence and enable each child to reach their fullest academic potential.

The whole-child curriculum is based on the integration of practical and artistic activities, and embedded state standards for literacy, social studies, science, and math through storytelling, drama, poetry, singing, movement, and outdoor activities. Teachers are expected to:

• Prepare and deliver instructional materials and lesson plans.
• Instruct and monitor students.
• Evaluate and document student progress.
• Communicate effectively with families.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lead a class of up to 28 students
• Teach state standards using current best educational practices as informed by the principles of Public Waldorf education
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, governing bodies, and administration to grow and develop Shade Canyon
• Engage in the creation of Shade Canyon School’s curriculum and policies to realize the school’s mission and contribute to the local community
• Perform other relevant duties as assigned

Qualifications:

The school seeks candidates with high academic standards, the knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to engage students of all temperaments and ability levels, and the interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with colleagues, administration, and parents. Strong skills in art, nature-based education, music, and/or drama are highly desired.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of Waldorf pedagogy, will bring this approach to life in the classroom, and will have strong classroom management skills that use positive discipline techniques when necessary. Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree required
• Have or be eligible for a California Teaching Credential for self-contained classroom (Multiple Subject)
• A minimum of two years of teaching experience at the K-8 level highly desired
• Waldorf certification preferred or commitment to enrolling in a Waldorf certification program as part of Shade Canyon employee benefit package
• Experience in teaching at Waldorf schools at multiple grade levels and/or nature-based education settings highly desired
• Local to Lake County preferred
• Fluency in Spanish preferred
