Job Description: Full-Time Transit and Rail Engineering Intern
This internship is part of WSP’s nationally recognized Top 100 Internship Program, offering hands-on experience and mentorship through their Developing Professionals Network. The 12-week program begins May 19th, 2025, with a flexible start date. The internship is based in Washington, DC, with potential locations in Herndon, VA; Baltimore, MD; and Richmond, VA. Relocation assistance is not provided.
Responsibilities:
• Support technical design and program management for various mass transit projects (bus rapid transit, high-speed rail, light rail, streetcars, subways, pedestrian facilities).
• Tasks may include CAD design, ridership modeling, vehicle/system procurement, station planning, specification development, and zero-emission technology support.
• Develop technical, social, and ethical skills through diverse engineering tasks.
• Learn fundamental principles of transit/transportation/civil engineering.
• Assist with project research, fieldwork, design calculations, and analysis.
• Contribute to final design plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
• Maintain project documentation.
• Complete assigned training.
• Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and safety policies.
• Perform additional duties as needed.
Required Qualifications:
• Active enrollment in an accredited undergraduate civil engineering or related program, with anticipated graduation in May 2026 or later.
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Demonstrated interest in transit/transportation and a desire to enhance skills relevant to WSP’s work.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to handle occasional travel and fieldwork.
• Capacity to follow directions from supervisors and mentors.
• Proficiency in technical writing, office software, and technology tools.
• Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to company policies.
• Authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Enrollment in a Master’s or PhD program.
• AutoCAD experience.
• Prior internship or campus leadership roles.
Expected Salary: $19 – $30 per hour (This is a range; actual pay may vary).
