Job Description

Here is the detailed, enriched job description for the Flight Software Intern position at Heart Aerospace:

Flight Software Intern

Heart Aerospace | Torrance, CA

About the Company and Project:

At Heart Aerospace, we are at the forefront of sustainable aviation, dedicated to building the ES-30, a groundbreaking regional hybrid-electric airplane. This revolutionary aircraft is designed to carry 30 passengers with a zero-emission capability up to 200 km and an extended hybrid range of 400 km. Our ambitious goal is to achieve type certification by the end of the decade and fundamentally shape the future of sustainable aviation.

Your Mission as a Flight Software Intern:

As a Flight Software Intern, you will play a crucial role in supporting the full lifecycle of the software that powers the ES-30 aircraft. You will work in close collaboration with experienced engineers, contributing to critical areas of development:

  • Develop and refine software requirements.
  • Write high-quality, reliable embedded code.
  • Build comprehensive tests, test infrastructure, and simulation tools.
  • Support essential documentation and verification processes.
  • Collaborate effectively across multi-functional engineering teams.
  • Contribute to the foundations of next-generation flight software, including:
    • Aircraft control functions
    • Simulation models and flight dynamics
    • Fault-tolerant system behaviors
    • Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) test systems

This internship is specifically designed for students who are eager to gain hands-on experience in shaping the future of electric aviation while working alongside industry experts.

You’re a Great Fit If You Are:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Passionate about aviation, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology.
  • Proficient in writing code with an emphasis (but not limited to) Rust, Python, C, or C++.
  • A strong communicator with solid teamwork skills.
  • Excited to learn how modern aircraft software is designed, tested, and certified.

Nice-to-Have Skills (Not Required!):

These skills are a bonus and not expected for interns, but if you possess any, they will be considered a strong asset:

  • Exposure to embedded systems, microcontrollers, or real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Project or internship experience with hardware-software integration, system-level testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with modeling or simulation tools (e.g., 6-DoF simulators, battery models).
  • Interest in system architecture, safety-critical design, or fault-tolerant software.

Why Join Heart Aerospace?

  • Be part of a mission-driven team revolutionizing aviation.
  • Gain real-world experience building software for a certifiable aircraft.
  • Work with cutting-edge tools, simulations, and embedded platforms.
  • Learn from engineers working on one of the most advanced electric aircraft programs in the world.

Compensation:

This position offers a competitive hourly rate allocated to $40 – $44/hr.
