Job Description, Detailed

This document describes the Finance Internship Program at AbbVie, an opportunity for students to gain world-class experience within the pharmaceutical industry.

Finance Internship Program Overview

The program is a paid, 10-12-week summer internship where participants will work on meaningful assignments that directly impact AbbVie’s business and patients globally. Ideal candidates are expected to combine strong technical and business knowledge with analytical strength and creative problem-solving skills.

The internship assignments are structured within four primary functional areas of the business:

Commercial Finance: This area provides global leadership, guidance, and financial support to AbbVie’s Commercial operations, including the Allergan Aesthetics business. Interns might work on forecasting for key brands in Immunology, Oncology, Neuroscience, or Eye Care, or support global operations and planning through Commercial International Therapeutics.
Operations Finance: This team offers leadership and guidance to Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Purchasing, and various other support functions related to financial planning and internal management reporting. The Finance team provides decision support services through the analysis of key financial information, actively driving operating margin improvement, maximizing tax-advantaged product sourcing, and ensuring an assurance of supply.
Research & Development (R&D) Finance: This function supports AbbVie’s R&D activities, primarily focusing on pipeline compounds under development. This includes activities from target and molecule discovery, through human clinical study conduct, to filing for regulatory approvals worldwide, and supporting on-market products for new indications and regulatory commitments. R&D Finance is generally aligned with the stages of compound development and its related operating functions.
Corporate Finance: This broad area encompasses several specialized functions:
Accounting: The Accounting Center of Excellence (COE) governs AbbVie’s global accounting function, establishing and monitoring global policies, procedures, and controls for the entire company.
Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A): FP&A drives business performance by serving as trusted advisors and partners who influence strategy, enable operational excellence, and maintain a strong controls environment.
Finance Shared Services: This department governs and supports AbbVie’s global, standardized, end-to-end, back-office processes, maintaining the operations and transactional business activities that enable the company to run efficiently.
Internal Audit: Internal Audit protects and enhances organizational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice, and insight.
Investor Relations (IR): The IR function is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive, strategic, and proactive investor relations program designed to optimize the value of AbbVie’s stock. IR serves as a primary interface to introduce, position, and market the company to equity analysts and large institutional investors, disseminating key company information regarding corporate strategy, financial performance, and product/pipeline performance to assist investors in making informed investment decisions. The IR team collaborates closely with numerous internal functions, including the Executive Leadership Team, Finance, Commercial, Legal, R&D, Public Affairs, Business Development, and Government Affairs.
Tax and Global Trade Compliance (GTC): The Tax team acts as a trusted business partner that enables the business by fulfilling tax legal obligations and through collaboration with key finance and operational functions. By managing the domestic and international tax profile, Tax delivers value to the company and its shareholders.
Treasury: Treasury provides centralized and efficient global business support in areas such as banking, foreign exchange, financial risk management, investments, and capital structure, ensuring adequate liquidity for the company and its subsidiaries. While its HQ is in Lake County, Treasury also has regional centers in Singapore, the Netherlands, and Colombia.

Interns will have the opportunity to work within one of many finance areas, including:
Financial Analysis
Budgets, Plans and Forecasts
Reporting & Controls
Manufacturing Operations Accounting

The majority of Finance Interns will be placed in Lake County, IL, though placements may occur at any U.S. AbbVie location, based on business needs and individual preferences where possible. Throughout the summer, interns will acquire valuable skills and be provided with professional development and networking opportunities. Interns are fully immersed in AbbVie’s culture, participating in social and philanthropy events, including AbbVie’s Week of Possibilities, and encouraged to join the health and wellness program, AbbVie Vitality.

Future Opportunities

AbbVie strongly considers high-performing interns as candidates for the Finance Development Program (FDP). The FDP offers rotational experiences designed to prepare individuals for financial management roles. FDP roles are crafted to help participants develop exceptional functional and leadership traits through a wide range of projects and exposure to different company leaders. Similar to the internship, FDP rotations are structured within AbbVie’s four functional business areas, aiming to put individuals on a fast track to future finance leadership opportunities.
