Job Description: Finance and Accounting Summer Intern

This is a dynamic internship experience designed to challenge interns through hands-on work, equipping them with valuable skills for their future careers. The program offers opportunities across various finance functions including planning and analytics, budget and expense management, controllership, and more. Interns will build their network through collaboration with talented peers and experienced employees, participating in team-building activities, mentorship programs, and social events.

Location Designation: Hybrid – 3 days per week (implied New York given the social event descriptions).

Role Overview:
As a Finance and Accounting Summer Intern, participants will gain crucial experience, skills, support, and exposure to help launch their careers. The program combines challenging work experience with close collaboration with Finance professionals. Generally, 15 Interns are selected each summer. The program offers competitive pay and the option of free housing. Upon completion of the internship, multiple offers will be extended for New York Life’s full-time Finance & Accounting Rotational Leadership program.

What You’ll Do (Key Activities & Development):

Development, Classes, and Presentations:
• The summer starts with training classes focusing on enhancing proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, along with an introduction to insurance and financial services industry concepts.
• Opportunities are provided to improve business and leadership skills.
Weekly seminars are presented by experienced professionals from Corporate Finance, Insurance, and Investments, aimed at understanding the industry, financial functions, and the organization.
Communication skills are developed through public speaking workshops and final presentations.
Mentor pairing with a full-time Finance employee provides guidance and support.
Exposure to the Senior Finance Leadership Team (SFLT), including a fireside group chat with New York Life’s Chief Financial Officer.
• Breakfast with New York Life’s Treasurer and Controller.
• Presentations by senior leaders from various Finance functions.
• Coffee chats with full-time associates in the Finance Rotational Leadership Program.
• A farewell dinner with Finance senior leaders.
• At the end of the summer, interns are required to give a formal presentation about their experience, projects, and assignments.

Social Events & Networking:
• Interns are encouraged to join full-time employees in various social events ranging from post-work gatherings to team-building sessions.
• Past events have included welcome breakfasts, ice cream socials, lunch with mentors, Finance engagement events, and a farewell dinner with the Senior Financial Leadership team.
Fun events have included a scavenger hunt around NYC, Yankee game, group volunteer activities, and trivia night.
• Finance interns also participate in Corporate Intern events, providing networking opportunities with peers outside of Finance.
• Past corporate events have included networking breakfasts and dinners, and communication and career planning workshops.
• Interns will be placed in small groups advised by a core group mentor who plans special events for the group.

What You’ll Bring (Qualifications):

Required Skills:
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with generative AI.
• A keen desire for continuous learning.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
Analytically minded, intellectually curious, and a team player.
Educational Requirements:
Rising juniors working toward a Bachelor’s degree with an accredited college or university (or in a Graduate program).
Preferred majors: Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Analytics.
Cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher.

Logistics:

• Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
• Interviews will begin mid-September.
Pay Rate: $26/hour.
Overtime eligible: Nonexempt.
Bonus Eligible: Not eligible for discretionary or sales bonus; however, actual base salary will be determined by individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, and job location, and employees may be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
