About Company

The Legal Aid Society (LAS) is the legal aid arm of Metropolitan Family Services, founded in 1886. It holds the distinction of being the oldest provider of legal aid in Illinois and the second oldest in the nation.

Mission: To protect and strengthen families by providing equal access to justice for all, with a specific focus on the most vulnerable communities, including those who are impoverished, the elderly, and victims of violence & crimes.

Location: LAS is based in Chicago, Illinois, and serves low-income clients across Cook and DuPage Counties, as well as the Decatur area. Interns, externs, and fellows generally work out of LAS’s downtown Chicago office, with some positions also based in Wheaton or Decatur, Illinois. Offices operate on a hybrid model, offering both in-person and remote opportunities.

Practice Groups: LAS is structured into four main practice groups:

Safety & Family: This group focuses on issues related to family law, securing orders of protection for survivors of domestic violence, and preventing the abuse and financial exploitation of seniors.
Health, Housing, & Economic Stability: This group provides representation to low-income tenants facing evictions, housing voucher terminations, and various other housing-related issues.
Individual Rights & Social Justice: This group works with survivors of human trafficking and immigrant victims of crime to help them obtain immigration relief, and also assists individuals with certain employment law matters.
Communities Partnering 4 Peace: This is a community lawyering project dedicated to removing barriers to housing, employment, and financial stability, among other issues, for members of the Chicago community who have been impacted by gun violence.
