Environmental, Health and Safety Intern (EHS Intern)

Job Purpose:

The AEC intern program is designed to provide firsthand working knowledge of environmental, health, and safety activities at AEC. The EHS Intern will be directly involved with all projects, activities, and events and responsible for helping meet expected deliverables to drive towards reducing environmental, health, and safety risk. The candidate will develop valuable problem-solving skills while assisting with the support of existing programs as well as the development of new procedures and processes.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Compliance Audits: Support the EHS team in conducting compliance audits to ensure adherence to environmental, health, and safety regulations and standards.
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Help collect and analyze data related to EHS performance metrics, including incidents, near misses, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Safety Inspections: Participate in safety inspections of facilities and equipment to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Training Programs: Assist in the development and delivery of EHS training programs for employees on topics such as safety procedures, emergency response, and environmental practices.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Help maintain accurate EHS documentation, including incident reports, safety data sheets, and training records, as well as preparing reports for management.
  • Environmental Programs: Support the implementation and monitoring of environmental programs, such as waste management, recycling initiatives, and energy conservation efforts.
  • Regulatory Research: Conduct research on relevant EHS regulations, standards, and best practices to support ongoing compliance and improvement efforts.
  • Program Development & Implementation: Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of health and safety methods, policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Risk Anticipation & Evaluation: Assist in anticipating, evaluating, and developing risk-minimization solutions for hazardous conditions and practices.
  • Incident Investigations: Engage in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation to prevent recurrence of incidents.
  • Continuous Improvement: Support improvements through the visual management process and facilitate the transactional flow of information throughout the facility.
  • Safe Work Instructions: Help revise and develop a foundation for safe work instructions for operators of critical machines throughout the facility.
  • EHS Program Assessment: Assist in assessing various environmental, health, and safety programs for gaps and perform corrective actions as directed by the Safety Manager (e.g., Lockout/Tagout updates, environmental chemical inventory).
  • Safety Culture Promotion: Engage with employees to promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship throughout the organization.
  • EHS Meetings: Participate in EHS meetings and committees, contributing ideas and insights to enhance safety and environmental initiatives.
  • Attendance: Mandatory attendance is required to ensure effective team collaboration and productivity.

Shift Information:

Day Shift, Monday – Friday, 40 Hours

Qualifications & Characteristics:

  • Education: Currently pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • EHS Principles Knowledge: Basic understanding of environmental, health, and safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess risks and develop effective solutions.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective interaction with team members and other departments.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of attention to detail in documentation, data analysis, and reporting tasks.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); familiarity with EHS software or tools is a plus.
  • Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute positively to group dynamics.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

Working Conditions:

Office environment with duties performed indoors. The noise level is moderate to quiet, and temperatures are comfortable. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental condition levels.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally positions self to move an office item greater than 10 lbs.
  • Frequently moves about the production floor and office area to attend meetings or trainings.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position up to 75% of the time.
  • Frequently operates a computer, enters data into systems, verifies information, etc.
