Job Description: Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Co-op Student
This is a paid EHS Co-op Student opportunity for Spring 2026, which includes a housing stipend. The assignment requires a minimum duration of 3 months. Alternatively, part-time employment (20+ hours/week) for 6 months also qualifies for this position.
Summary:
The EHS Co-op Student will be engaged in job assignments directly related to their chosen functional environmental or safety discipline, applying academic knowledge to practical situations.
Essential Functions:
• Apply EHS Principles: Translate theoretical EHS principles learned in school into hands-on, real-world scenarios.
• Workplace Engagement: Collaborate with the hourly workforce to address and resolve day-to-day safety concerns.
• Hazard Mapping: Develop and create Department Hazard Maps to identify and visualize potential risks.
• Policy Review: Review existing Environmental / Safety Policies, Procedures, and Programs to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
• Respirator Fit Testing: Conduct Respirator Fit Testing for employees, ensuring proper protective equipment usage.
• Hearing Conservation: Perform a Plant-wide Hearing Conservation Survey to assess noise exposure and implement protective measures.
• Data Research: Gather and research Safety Data for the Safety Department, supporting data-driven decision-making.
• Confined Space Evaluations: Conduct Confined Space Entry Evaluations to ensure safe practices for entry into confined spaces.
• Job Safety Analyses (JSA): Perform Job Safety Analyses (JSA) for various processes and tasks to identify and mitigate hazards.
• Environmental Projects: Work on diverse environmental projects, contributing to the company’s environmental sustainability efforts.
• Professional Development: Attend safety training sessions and other relevant educational opportunities, such as the Jefferson County Safety Council Luncheon, Emergency Response & Fire Brigade training, etc.
• Other Duties: Undertake other duties as assigned by the department.
Additional Responsibilities:
• Daily Safety Inspections: Conduct routine daily safety inspections across the facility.
• Concern Escalation: Promptly bring any identified safety concerns to the attention of the Safety Department.
Qualifications:
• Education and Experience:
• Must be a full-time student actively pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in an Environmental or Safety discipline.
• Special Skills:
• Possess knowledge of related environmental, health, and safety engineering practices and regulatory compliance bodies (e.g., EPA, OSHA, NFPA, ANSI).
• Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Visio.
