Job Description: Fall 2025 Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Co-op Student

This is a paid co-op student opportunity available for Fall 2025, which includes a housing stipend.

Opportunity Details:
Duration: A minimum of a 3-month assignment. Alternatively, part-time employment (20+ hours per week) for 6 months also qualifies.
Employment Type: Co-op student.

EHS Co-op Student Summary:
The EHS Co-op Student will engage in job assignments directly related to their functional environmental or safety discipline. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to apply academic knowledge to real-world EHS challenges within a professional setting.

Essential Functions:
The EHS Co-op Student will be responsible for a variety of tasks crucial to maintaining a safe and environmentally compliant workplace. These include:
• Applying EHS principles learned in an academic setting to practical, real-world situations.
• Collaborating with the hourly workforce to proactively address and resolve day-to-day safety concerns.
• Developing Department Hazard Maps to identify and visualize potential risks within various work areas.
• Reviewing and assessing existing Environmental / Safety Policies, Procedures, and Programs to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
• Conducting Respirator Fit Testing for employees to ensure proper protection and compliance.
• Performing a Plant-wide Hearing Conservation Survey to monitor noise levels and assess employee hearing health.
• Gathering and researching Safety Data for the Safety Department to support informed decision-making and trend analysis.
• Executing Confined Space Entry Evaluations to ensure safe entry and work procedures in restricted areas.
• Performing Job Safety Analyses (JSA) for various processes and tasks to identify hazards and implement control measures.
• Working on various environmental projects, contributing to the company’s sustainability and compliance initiatives.
• Attending safety training sessions and other appropriate educational opportunities, such as the Jefferson County Safety Council Luncheon and participating in Emergency Response & Fire Brigade activities.
• Performing other duties as assigned to support the EHS department’s objectives.

Additional Responsibilities:
Beyond the essential functions, the co-op student will also:
• Perform daily safety inspections to identify and mitigate immediate hazards.
• Bring any identified safety concerns directly to the Safety Department for prompt action and resolution.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
• Applicants must be a full-time student actively pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in an Environmental or Safety discipline.

Special Skills:
• Demonstrated knowledge of related environmental, health, and safety engineering practices and regulatory compliance (e.g., EPA, OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, etc.).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Visio is required for data management, reporting, and process documentation.
