Job Description:

The City of New York’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking Environmental Engineering Interns for the Stormwater Permitting section within the Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis (BEPA). BEPA is responsible for the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) planning and implementation for the City. The Stormwater Permitting Section implements regulations and permit requirements related to stormwater management during construction and post-construction phases. The interns will review construction plans, inspect sites, and ensure compliance with stormwater management regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate the ability to read and understand engineering plans and drawings.
• Understand requirements of the SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan), applicable rules, and codes.
• Complete calculations to check designs.
• Review applications for compliance with rules.
• Respond to complaints.
• Inspect construction sites for compliance with approved plans.
• Inspect stormwater management practices (SMPs) for compliance with permit.
• Communicate questions and concerns on applications and inspections.

Qualifications:

• A baccalaureate degree in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college; or
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work.
