Job Description: Engineering Safety Intern
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) paid summer internship for ambitious students interested in engineering and safety. The role is within a 24/7 operations environment, requiring flexibility and availability for on-call duties, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Significant travel (up to 75%) and relocation are required, with the intern’s location potentially changing based on business needs. Reliable transportation is essential.
Training:
The internship begins with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, including a company overview and networking opportunities. This is followed by ongoing project support and practical field training at the assigned location.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Catalogue historic BNSF Engineering Safety incidents: This involves contributing to the development of a safety events database.
• Assist in development of Engineering System Safety briefing material: Create documents for field leader briefings.
• Participate and Observe field inspections: Work alongside managers in Quality Assurance, focusing on Continuous Welded Rail management and Derailment Prevention activities.
Secondary Responsibilities:
• Inspect, maintain, repair, and construct track infrastructure: This includes rails, ties, and ballast, ensuring compliance with BNSF standards.
• Plan/Schedule maintenance and repairs: Manage the planning and scheduling of necessary work, ensuring quality control.
• Expand and update BNSF infrastructure: Contribute to projects involving BNSF terminals, hubs, central lines, facilities, structure repair/replacement, public projects, and utility crossings.
• Manage project safety, finances, and schedules: Oversee project teams, budgets, timelines, and stakeholder communication.
• Shadow various positions: Gain hands-on experience by shadowing roles such as Supervisor Engineering Support, Assistant Roadmaster, Roadmaster, and Division Engineer.
Work Environment:
The internship involves both indoor and outdoor work in a safety-sensitive environment, with exposure to diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, sleet). The work may involve walking on uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
Basic Qualifications:
• Legally authorized to work in the US (no sponsorship needed).
• Ability to work in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and safely perform outdoor duties in all weather conditions.
• Ability to climb ladders and navigate uneven surfaces.
• Willingness to relocate anywhere within the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) for the summer and travel extensively.
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Data Science, Engineering (various disciplines), Construction Management, Business, or a similar field from an accredited university.
• Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA.
• Less than three years of professional work experience (excluding internships, part-time jobs).
• Access to reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior internship experience or less than 3 years of work experience in related fields (Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, Construction, Logistics).
• Leadership experience in campus, community, or extracurricular organizations.
