Engineering Internship Job Description
Cargill offers Engineering Internships in various production facilities across the United States. Interns will gain practical experience in either Operations Leadership or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering. The internships are designed to provide exposure to both technical and management aspects of engineering, fostering long-term career aspirations. The internship duration is typically 12 weeks.
Possible Career Paths (following internship):
• Production Management Engineers: Lead people, processes, and product in a plant environment. Responsibilities include direct supervision of operators, participation in production management meetings, managing government regulations and compliance (environmental, health, safety, maintenance, housekeeping), team development, hiring, scheduling, and employee relations. They also contribute to process optimization, equipment and process reliability, and capital projects.
• Environmental Engineers: Work with various teams and assets related to refrigeration, steam, freshwater, hot water, and compressed air systems. Responsibilities may include operation of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), environmental compliance programs, regulatory permitting, supervision of operators and technicians, and planning for weekly maintenance, capital projects, and process improvements.
• Process/Project Engineers: Handle business case development, vendor selection, budget management, and project management for major projects involving process optimization, safety, quality, infrastructure, and energy use. They contribute to innovation processes, idea generation, reliability-centered design, and implement technical initiatives.
• Maintenance & Reliability Engineers: Engage teams to improve processes and asset utilization for efficient facility operation. This involves minimizing downtime and repair costs, supervising specialized teams, and leading short- and long-term planning (including weekly maintenance, capital projects, process improvement). They utilize tools such as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), 5S, and 5-Why.
Internship Work Environment:
The internship is hands-on and fast-paced within a team-oriented plant environment. The work is physically demanding and requires moderate exertion involving bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 50 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Exposure to heat, cold, grain dust, etc., is possible. Interns are expected to be geographically flexible and willing to relocate to any U.S. location.
Internship Programming:
Cargill provides various development opportunities, including leadership exposure, networking events with other interns, and access to volunteer and community outreach programs. High-performing interns may be offered a second internship or a full-time position.
Compensation & Benefits:
The hourly rate is $25.00-$34.70, dependent on graduation date and full-time employment eligibility. Benefits include paid time off, a mental health and wellbeing program, a digital learning library, and potential housing/relocation assistance.
