Job Description: Engineering Intern – Signal Department

Duration: June 9, 2025 – August 1, 2025
Location: Lenexa, KS (relocation required)
Salary: $4,875 per month
Number of Positions: 2

As a paid Engineering Intern in the Signal department, you will gain valuable experience in railroad signaling systems, crucial for BNSF’s operational safety and efficiency. You will work on real-world projects alongside industry experts, applying your academic knowledge to maintain and innovate the railway infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

Inspect, maintain, repair, and construct signal infrastructure: This includes wayside signals, highway grade crossings, and signal bungalows.
Plan and schedule maintenance and repairs: Ensure the quality of work completed.
Expand and update BNSF infrastructure: Oversee projects that interact with BNSF property, including terminal and hub expansions, central line improvements, facility upgrades, structure repair and replacement, and public projects and utility crossings.
Safety: Be responsible for the safety of your team.
Project Management: Manage finances, schedules, and communication with stakeholders.
Shadowing: Gain hands-on experience by shadowing positions such as Signal Supervisor, Signal Construction Supervisor, Signal Maintainer, Signal Manager, and Director of Signal.

Working Environment:

Indoor/outdoor: You will be working in a safety-sensitive environment, potentially exposed to diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, sleet).
Physical demands: You will be required to walk on uneven surfaces, work around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Program Details:

Training: The program starts with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, providing a company overview and networking opportunities with leaders. You will then receive support on ongoing projects and practical field training at an assigned location.
Travel: This is a full-time (40hrs/wk) position that requires travel up to 75% of the time. You must have reliable transportation to and from work and be flexible with your location (potential for relocation depending on business needs).

This internship program offers a potential path to joining BNSF’s Management Trainee Program upon graduation.

Basic Qualifications:

• Legally authorized to work in the United States and at least 18 years old upon hire.
• No sponsorship required.
• Capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Ability to safely perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Able to climb ladders and navigate uneven surfaces.
• Willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) for the summer and travel to other locations as required.
• Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, etc.), Construction Management, Business, or a similar degree program from an accredited university.
• Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA.
• Less than 3 years of professional work experience (excluding internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing your degree).
• Access to reliable transportation for the duration of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior internship experience or less than 3 years of work experience in Engineering, Business, Construction, or a related field.
• Leadership experience in a campus, community, or extracurricular organization.
