About the Internship
Join West Basin Municipal Water District, a leader in water recycling, conservation, water resource management, and youth and adult education. We provide drinking water and recycled water to nearly one million residents in 17 cities and unincorporated areas along the coastal corridor of southern Los Angeles County.
We are seeking an Engineering Intern to work with Professional Engineers in our Engineering Department. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the development of recycled water production, storage, and distribution facilities, assist with capital improvement programs, and contribute to critical water resource management efforts.

About West Basin Municipal Water District
The District is governed by an elected five-member Board of Directors and is a member agency of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. West Basin operates the Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility (ECLWRF), the largest treatment and water purification facility of its type, providing nearly 40 million gallons of water each day. We utilize various advanced treatment processes to produce five types of “fit-for-purpose” waters used for commercial, industrial, and landscape purposes.
West Basin owns and operates over 100 miles of recycled water pipelines, supplying recycled water for non-potable use. We assist customers with converting their sites to recycled water use and conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with safe use practices.

Engineering Intern Role and Responsibilities
The Engineering Intern will be assigned to the District’s Engineering Department to work with Professional Engineers. Tasks include:
- Performing various tasks related to the development of recycled water production, storage, and distribution facilities.
- Assisting with management of the capital improvement program and construction projects.
- Assisting with field inspections and oversight for small construction projects.
- Compilation of data for engineering studies and analyses.
- Assisting in standard Engineering Department duties such as filing, document management, and deliveries.
Qualifications
Educational Requirements:
The Engineering Intern must meet one of the following two requirements:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or community college with at least sophomore standing.
- Recent completion of a Bachelor’s degree in the previous six (6) months.
A major or degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field is required to be considered. Applicants who are not currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, community college, or who graduated before December 2025 will not be considered.
Required Skills:
- Excellent communication and technical skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Comprehensive computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with District Board members, managers, staff, vendors, consultants, and representatives of other governmental agencies.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment within established guidelines.
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions:
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to kneel, crouch, stand, walk, twist, reach, or bend for prolonged periods.
- Occasionally be available at times other than regularly scheduled work hours, such as nights and weekends. Weekend work may be required on an as-needed basis.
Driver’s License:
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License, proof of insurance, and an acceptable driving record are preferred at the time of appointment.
- The employee is required to use their vehicle with mileage reimbursed at the standard IRS rate.
Job Details
- Position Type: Full-year, in-person, part-time/temporary, at-will position.
- Duration: Intern must be able to work for at least a minimum of six months.
- Work Hours: Flexible, averaging approximately 15-20 hours maximum per week in the fiscal year period (July – June). School schedule will be accommodated.
- Compensation: $18.50 – $21.50 per hour, depending on qualifications.
- Benefits: This position is not eligible for District benefits.
