AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) offers an exciting paid summer internship opportunity within its SciLine department. SciLine is dedicated to enriching U.S. journalism with credible scientific evidence and expertise, and this internship plays a key role in achieving that mission.

About SciLine

SciLine is a free service for journalists and scientists, funded by philanthropies and a unit of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). SciLine provides journalists with access to scientists and scientific information to help them cover science and evidence-based stories more accurately and effectively. This includes offering rapid expert matching, media briefings, and resources for evidence-based reporting.

Role Summary

The Engagement Intern will support SciLine’s efforts to build relationships and engage audiences, helping to connect journalists, scientists, and content creators with reliable scientific information. This includes contributing to partnership development, program design, and collaborative projects, with a particular focus on content creators and Spanish-language news media. The intern will also assist with social media activities to promote SciLine’s programs, resources, and collaborations.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Partnership Support: Aid in building relationships with key partners such as news organizations, journalism networks, and community-based media. This involves researching organizations, maintaining partner databases, and assisting with outreach, scheduling, and follow-up communications.
  • Program Development: Help with the design and planning of engagement programs, events, and pilot initiatives.
  • Content Creator Collaborations: Coordinate projects with content creators, including conducting research, facilitating outreach, and managing follow-up communications.
  • Spanish-Language Media Engagement: Support outreach to and engagement with Spanish-language news media, which includes maintaining contact lists and drafting relevant materials.
  • Social Media Management: Contribute to content creation and outreach across various social media platforms (e.g., LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Bluesky) to promote SciLine’s work.
  • Strategic Research: Conduct background research and compile briefings to inform partnership strategies and program development.
  • General Engagement Support: Assist SciLine staff with various engagement-related projects, including outreach, coordination, and documentation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (or transitioning between the two) at a university/college.
  • Demonstrated strong interest in journalism, media engagement, science communication, or public-facing programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity and comfort with creating content for social media.
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively within a mission-driven, nonprofit environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is not required but is highly preferred.
  • Experience engaging audiences through social media for a nonprofit, newsroom, or mission-driven organization is a plus.

Internship Details

  • Location: This is a remote internship. However, interns in or near the D.C. area have the option to work from the AAAS D.C. office and attend in-person events (typically 1-2 times per week).
  • Duration: 12-week internship, running from June 1, 2026, to August 21, 2026.
  • Compensation: The anticipated initial rate of compensation is $17.95 per hour.
  • Work Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
