Energy Accounting or Analyst Intern | Xcel Energy

The Tone:
This is an internship at Xcel Energy, located in Golden, CO, with a hybrid work policy. Xcel Energy is a leading combination electricity and natural gas energy company, providing a comprehensive portfolio of energy-related products and services to 3.4 million electricity and 1.9 million natural gas customers across eight Western and Midwestern states. This role supports the PSCo Transmission Control Center by assisting with critical data functions, ensuring accurate accounting and reliable grid operations for communities.

The TL;DR

• Team: Supports the PSCo Transmission Control Center, working closely with Energy Accounting personnel, Balancing Authority Operations, and other stakeholders.
• Mission: Ensure accurate accounting of power flows, interchange transactions, and settlement-quality data to support reliable grid operations.
• Tech Stack: Energy Management System (EMS), Integrated Energy Management (IEM) systems

What You’ll Actually Do
• Data Validation: Assist with validating and reconciling hourly and monthly energy accounting data, including generation, load, interchange, and transmission transactions.
• Discrepancy Analysis: Analyze data from the Energy Management System (EMS) and Integrated Energy Management (IEM) systems to identify discrepancies and support reliable energy settlements.
• Issue Investigation: Support investigations of interchange, tagging, metering, and energy checkout issues to improve data accuracy and operational performance.
• Reporting Development: Develop reports, dashboards, spreadsheets, and data analyses used by Transmission Operations, Energy Accounting, and leadership teams.
• Regulatory Support: Assist with regulatory, reliability, and settlement reporting requirements by gathering, validating, and organizing operational data.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Current student, Sophomore or higher (as of Fall 2027), enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
• Experience: Ability to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week), while commuting to the designated work location in-person, per hybrid work policy.
• Skills: Data collection, validation, analysis, and reconciliation; report and dashboard development using spreadsheets and data analysis tools; understanding of operational data for settlements and regulatory compliance.
• Bonus: A desire to learn new energy markets and the operational aspects of how an electric transmission grid operates.
