Electrical Engineer 1 – Hybrid Role
Work Arrangement: Hybrid (3 days Onsite, 2 days Remote) – Candidate will work in a hybrid work arrangement reporting in-person/in-office at least 3 days per week (12 days a month), at the manager’s discretion.
Primary Work Location: Alabama Power Company (APC) Headquarters Building, 600 North 18th Street, Birmingham, AL, 35203.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an entry-level Electrical Engineer to join the Schatz Grid Visualization and Analytics Center (SGVAC) within Client’s Research & Development department. The SGVAC is a dynamic innovation center dedicated to advancing situational awareness technologies for Transmission and Distribution. The successful candidate will support and, in time, lead projects focused on deploying and evaluating emerging grid technologies, with an emphasis on power system analysis, modeling, simulation, data analytics, and visualization.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop research plans for evaluating new technologies.
- Manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Provide comprehensive documentation of study assumptions and methodologies.
- Prepare and deliver informative reports and presentations on project outcomes.
- Support projects and eventually lead efforts to deploy and evaluate the performance of emerging technologies in grid operations and planning.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (EE) required.
Experience:
- 0-3 years of related experience.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in power system modeling and simulation (RTDS, PSCAD, or PSS/E) required.
- Knowledge of databases, data structures, and computer networking is desirable.
- Aptitude to apply engineering analysis to solve complex problems.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong communication skills, both internal and external.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Self-starter with strong initiative and the ability to manage own work schedule with limited direction.
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities.
Desired Qualifications
- Specialization in Power Systems.
- Training in/experience with computer programming (Python, C#, SQL).
- Training in/experience with data science.
Work Environment and Specifics
This position supports the Grid Operations and Planning Research area, focusing primarily on tools to support grid operations. The work may involve projects in other areas of the power system. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes a hard hat, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes. Some overnight travel may be required, but it is not extensive.
