Job Description: Early Career Environmental Scientist
WSP is seeking an Early Career Environmental Scientist for its Tallahassee, Florida office. This role focuses on two primary areas within the Earth & Environment Business Line:
1. Site Assessment and Remediation:
• Assisting multi-disciplinary teams in site assessment and remediation activities. This involves fieldwork related to surface water, soil, groundwater, sediment, and air sampling.
• Maintaining quality control standards and procedures for data collection and analysis.
• Generating accurate and concise documentation using electronic systems (GPS) and field notebooks.
• Adhering to safety guidelines and site-specific procedures.
• Utilizing advanced technologies and techniques to analyze organic and inorganic compounds.
• Researching environmental databases on historical property land uses.
• Preparing reports and presentations based on data analysis.
• Preparing and implementing site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
• Interacting professionally with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, landowners, and clients.
• Completing training on assigned tasks under the guidance of experienced professionals.
2. Natural Resources Management:
• Supporting multidisciplinary teams in biological fieldwork. This includes wetland delineations, habitat classification, threatened and endangered species surveys, seagrass surveys, and water quality monitoring. This work supports coastal restoration/resiliency and other development projects.
General Responsibilities:
• Fieldwork: Conducting fieldwork related to both contaminated site assessment/remediation and natural resources management projects. This often involves working in diverse settings and weather conditions and requires the ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Documentation: Maintaining accurate and complete records of fieldwork, data analysis, and project findings. Proficiency with various software and technologies is necessary.
• Communication: Effectively communicating with colleagues, clients, and regulatory agencies, both orally and in writing.
• Safety: Adhering strictly to safety protocols and procedures. This includes HAZWOPER training and a fit-for-duty exam.
• Teamwork: Working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams.
• Professional Conduct: Acting ethically and responsibly, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
• Travel: Domestic travel will be required, potentially up to one to two weeks per month depending on project needs.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
• 0-1 years of relevant experience.
• Strong willingness to learn and be mentored.
• Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Competent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in technical writing, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant software.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
• Ability to pass HAZWOPER physical, fit-for-duty exam, and 40-hour HAZWOPER training.
• Familiarity with environmental laws, regulations, and compliance practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to swim (for coastal restoration projects).
