Job Description: Early Career Civil/Geotechnical Engineer – Mine Waste Team
WSP is seeking a full-time, early career Civil/Geotechnical Engineer to join our US Mine Waste Team. This role is available in our Reno, NV, Elko, NV, or Costa Mesa, CA offices. You will be part of a regional team, contributing to challenging mining, heavy civil, and geotechnical projects, with opportunities to grow within a dynamic organization focused on client objectives and problem-solving.
Your Impact and Responsibilities:
- Work within the mine waste team on civil and geotechnical engineering projects primarily for the mining industry, with potential for involvement in other sectors.
- Perform various engineering tasks including:
- Site and material characterization.
- Facility design, focusing on grading, storage capacity, and construction quantity evaluations.
- Conducting slope stability, seepage, consolidation, liner system, and settlement analyses.
- Designing and analyzing surface water management facilities.
- Prepare sections of technical reports documenting field and laboratory investigations, engineering analyses, and facility designs.
- Assist in the preparation of project design packages, which include technical drawings, specifications, engineering calculations, schedules, and cost estimates.
- Undertake domestic and international field assignments, such as geotechnical investigations and construction monitoring.
- Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebooks/logs.
- Adhere to safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including but not limited to location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction protocols.
- Complete required training for assigned tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, in strict adherence to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Fulfill additional responsibilities as dictated by business needs.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience: 0 to 1 year of relevant post-education experience.
- Certification: Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or the ability to complete it within 6 months of the start date.
- Research & Analytical Skills: Excellent research skills coupled with an analytical mindset.
- Communication: Competent interpersonal and communication skills for effective and professional interaction with both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Self-Leadership: Proficient self-leadership with strong attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and prioritize responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Teamwork & Independence: Ability to work both independently under general supervision and collaboratively as part of a team to achieve business objectives.
- Technical Proficiency: Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation software, spreadsheets, and other relevant technology and tools.
- Safety Commitment: Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adhering to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Work Schedule: Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek, conducive to project-specific requirements.
- Travel: Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
- Master’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical engineering, or a relevant field of study.
- Prior internship experience related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
- Membership and/or active participation in local professional practice organizations.
Compensation & Benefits:
WSP offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to provide health and financial stability throughout an employee’s career. Expected Salary (California Only): $58,200 – $87,300. The final compensation offered may vary based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and specific geographic location, as well as other factors not related to protected status.
