Job Description: Early Career Civil/Geotechnical Engineer
WSP is currently seeking a Full-Time Early Career Civil/Geotechnical Engineer to join our team. This role is available in our Reno, NV, Elko, NV, or Costa Mesa, CA offices. You will be an integral part of our US Mine Waste Team, working on challenging mining, heavy civil, and geotechnical projects within a growing organization dedicated to meeting client objectives and solving complex challenges. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to significant projects under the #globalmining initiative.
Your Impact and Responsibilities:
- Work within our dedicated mine waste team, focusing on civil and geotechnical engineering projects primarily for the mining industry, with opportunities to engage in projects across other industries.
- Perform a variety of engineering tasks, including:
- Site and material characterization.
- Facility design, encompassing grading, storage capacity assessments, and construction quantity evaluations.
- In-depth analyses such as slope stability, seepage, consolidation, liner system integrity, and settlement.
- Design and analysis of surface water management facilities.
- Prepare distinct portions of technical reports, documenting comprehensive field and laboratory investigations, detailed engineering analyses, and facility designs.
- Assist in the development of complete project design packages, which include technical drawings, specifications, engineering calculations, project schedules, and cost estimates.
- Undertake domestic and international field assignments, which may involve geotechnical investigations and construction monitoring activities.
- Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation utilizing electronic systems, technical drawings, and detailed field/work site notebooks/logs.
- Strictly comply with all safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including but not limited to, accurate location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction protocols.
- Complete all assigned training tasks diligently.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making concerning company funds, resources, and conduct, consistently adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and all related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as dictated by business needs.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience: 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
- Certifications: Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, or the demonstrable ability to complete the exam within 6 months of the start date.
- Analytical Skills: Excellent research skills coupled with a strong analytical mindset.
- Communication: Competent interpersonal and communication skills for effective and professional interaction with both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Self-Leadership: Proficient self-leadership, exhibiting strong attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and effective prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Teamwork: Ability to work both independently under general supervision and collaboratively as part of a team to achieve business objectives.
- Technical Proficiency: Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation software, spreadsheets, and various technology and tools.
- Safety Commitment: Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and the ability to adhere to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Work Schedule: Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements, which may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Travel: Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific demands.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certifications: Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
- Education: Master’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, or a relevant field of study.
- Internship Experience: Prior internship experience related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
- Professional Involvement: Membership and/or active participation in local professional practice organizations.

Compensation (California Only):
Expected Salary: $58,200 – $87,300
WSP USA provides this compensation range in good faith, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and to offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances unrelated to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
