About BI-DesignLab (BIDL)

Brunswick’s BI-DesignLab (BIDL) is a member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Research Park. It serves as a hub for extracting high-quality insights from data to support digital products and drive business strategies.

Position Overview

The Data Science Intern at Brunswick’s BI-DesignLab (BIDL) will be a motivated and detail-oriented individual with a strong desire to extract high-quality insights from data. The intern will collaborate closely with the digital products team from Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick, to derive business insights and strategies. This data will be instrumental in product planning, market analysis, business case development, product line management, and new product development activities.

Essential Functions

The responsibilities and projects for this role are dynamic and varied, but will include:

  • Data Management: Collect, clean, and process data from connected vessels, IoT devices, and cloud platforms.
  • Data Exploration: Explore telemetry, usage, and sensor datasets to identify patterns, trends, and insights that improve user experience and product performance.
  • Model Development: Build analytical models or lightweight machine learning prototypes that support predictive insights, diagnostics, or product recommendations.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with digital products and engineering teams to translate problem statements into concrete analytical tasks.
  • Pipeline Refinement: Assist with developing or refining model pipelines, ensuring data quality and integrity throughout.
  • Communication: Create visualizations, dashboards, or reporting flows that communicate insights clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Documentation: Document data sources, modeling assumptions, and analytical approaches.
  • Connectivity Support: Support ongoing connectivity initiatives by analyzing system interactions, device behavior, and user telemetry as referenced in connectivity strategy materials.

Required Qualifications

  • Work Authorization: Permanent US Work authorization. (Temporary work visas or CPT/OPT authorization are not accepted for this role.)
  • Education: Current enrollment in a BS in a field related to Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
  • Programming: Demonstrable experience with Python for data analysis (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn).
  • Analytical Skills: Familiarity with exploratory data analysis, statistical methods, and data visualization.
  • Data Handling: Ability to work with unstructured or imperfect real-world datasets.
  • Communication: Strong communication skills – able to translate analytical findings into actionable insights.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cloud Experience: Experience with cloud analytics environments (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
  • IoT Exposure: Exposure to IoT or connectivity data flows.
  • Machine Learning: Knowledge of machine learning model development or MLOps tools.
  • Visualization Tools: Experience with dashboards (Power BI, Tableau) or visualization libraries.
  • Industry Interest: Interest in connected products, digital ecosystems, or recreational technology markets.

Travel Requirements

Summer: Somewhat frequent travel to Wisconsin will be required during the summer.

  • Several days to a full week at the start of the summer.
  • Multiple times during the remainder of the summer.
  • At least three day trips during June and July.
  • Up to, but not more than, one day trip per week of the summer.

Fall (if internship extends): No travel requirements, but weekly hour-long check-in meetings with the digital products team. Infrequent travel asks during the semester (likely less than once a month) may occur.

  • Hands-on Experience: Internships are designed to provide hands-on experience in a professional setting, working alongside experienced professionals and applying academic knowledge to real-world tasks.
  • Collaborative Environment: The work environment is supportive, collaborative, and conducive to learning. Interns typically work on specific projects or tasks that contribute to organizational goals.
  • Hours:
    • Summer: Expected to work 40 hours in person at the lab each week.
    • Fall/Spring: Must work at least 8 hours in person at the lab each week, up to a maximum of 20 hours.
  • Feedback & Reviews: Interns will receive feedback and performance reviews throughout their assignment to understand progress and areas for improvement.
  • Responsibility: Interns are expected to manage their own schedules, set goals, and seek feedback for their professional development.

Anticipated Pay Range

The anticipated pay range for this position is $23.00 – $26.00 per hour. The actual hourly rate offered will depend on multiple factors including year in school, degree, job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, and business needs.
