Job Description – Data Engineer Intern

This full-time internship at Amazon offers a chance to contribute to the development of cutting-edge data solutions and work alongside industry-leading engineers. As a Data Engineer Intern, you will be involved in various aspects of data management, including:

Designing and implementing data pipelines: You’ll develop automated systems for collecting, processing, and analyzing large volumes of log events from diverse sources.
Managing data warehouses and databases: You’ll design data schemas and operate both SQL and NoSQL database systems.
Developing and maintaining data analytics: You’ll be responsible for building metrics, reports, analyses, and dashboards used by engineers, analysts, and data scientists to drive key business decisions.
Troubleshooting data issues: You’ll monitor and resolve operational or data problems within the data pipelines.
Contributing to data architecture: You’ll participate in planning and implementing future data storage, reporting, and analytic solutions.
Collaborating with stakeholders: You’ll work closely with Business Analysts, Data Scientists, and other internal partners to identify opportunities and solve problems.

Internship Structure:

Full-time position: Interns work Monday-Friday, up to 40 hours per week, typically between 8am-5pm.
Summer program: The internship starts in May/June 2025.
Mentorship and guidance: You will be paired with a manager and a mentor to support your growth and development.
Impactful projects: You will have the opportunity to lead mission-critical projects and contribute to solving complex technical challenges.

Requirements:

Experience: Demonstrated experience with databases, data warehouses, data lakes, SQL, and at least one scripting language (Python, KornShell, Scala).
Education: Currently enrolled in or will receive a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Management, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline with a conferral date between October 2025 – December 2028.
Work commitment: Ability to work 40 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of data schema design, including normalization, relational models, and dimensional models.
• Experience with building data pipelines or automated ETL processes.
• Expertise in writing and optimizing SQL queries for large datasets.
• Familiarity with big data processing technologies (Hadoop, ApacheSpark), data warehouse architecture, ETL, and reporting/analytic tools.
• Experience with data visualization software (AWS QuickSight, Tableau) or open-source projects.
• Master’s degree or advanced technical degree with a conferral date between October 2025 – December 2028.
• Previous technical internship experience.
• Prior experience with AWS.

Compensation:

• Base pay: Ranges from $43.85/hr in the lowest geographic market to $88.94/hr in the highest geographic market.
• Total compensation: May include equity, sign-on payments, and other benefits, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits.
