Job Description: Data Engineer Intern

This is a full-time internship position with a typical work schedule of Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, for up to 40 hours per week. Specific team norms may be communicated by your manager.

Internship Requirements:

• Applicants must have a minimum of one quarter/semester/trimester remaining in their studies after the internship concludes.
• No conflicts with classes or other employment during the Amazon workday.

Location:

• Openings are available across multiple US locations, including: Greater Seattle Area, Greater Bay Area, Greater DMV, Austin, New York City, and Minneapolis.
• You can express your preferred location and start date during the application process, but there are no guarantees.
• Final location and start dates will be communicated during the job offer process.
• Internship start dates for this posting are during the summer, starting in May/June 2025.

As a Data Engineer Intern at Amazon, you will have the opportunity to:

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, implement, and automate deployment of distributed systems for collecting and processing log events from various sources.
• Design data schema and operate internal data warehouses using SQL and NoSQL database systems.
• Own the design, development, and maintenance of metrics, reports, analyses, and dashboards used by engineers, analysts, and data scientists for key business decisions.
• Monitor and troubleshoot operational and data issues within the data pipelines.
• Develop architectural plans and implementations for future data storage, reporting, and analytic solutions.
• Create code-based automated data pipelines capable of processing millions of data points.
• Optimize database and data warehouse performance by tuning inefficient queries.
• Collaborate with Business Analysts, Data Scientists, and other internal partners to identify opportunities and problems.
• Assist with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolving defects.

What We Look For:

Basic Qualifications:
• Experience with database, data warehouse, or data lake solutions.
• Proficiency in SQL.
• Familiarity with one or more scripting languages (e.g., Python, KornShell, Scala).
• 18 years of age or older.
• Commitment to work a minimum of 40 hours per week for a 12-week internship.
• Experience with data transformation.
• Currently enrolled in or will receive a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Management, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline with a conferral date between October 2025 and December 2028.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Understanding of designing and implementing data schemas (e.g., normalization, relational vs. dimensional models).
• Experience building data pipelines or automated ETL processes.
• Expertise in writing and optimizing SQL queries with large-scale datasets.
• Experience with big data processing technologies (e.g., Hadoop or Apache Spark), data warehouse technical architecture, infrastructure components, ETL, and reporting/analytic tools and environments.
• Familiarity with data visualization software (e.g., AWS QuickSight or Tableau) or open-source projects.
• Enrolled in a Master’s degree or advanced technical degree with a conferral date between October 2025 and December 2028.
• Previous technical internship experience.
• Prior experience with AWS.
• Ability to articulate the basic differences between datatypes (e.g., JSON/NoSQL, relational).

Compensation:

• Base pay ranges from $43.85/hr in the lowest geographic market up to $88.94/hr in the highest geographic market.
• Pay is based on factors such as market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
• Amazon offers a total compensation package that may include equity, sign-on payments, and other benefits in addition to a comprehensive range of medical, financial, and other benefits.
