Job Title: Criminal Justice Internship (Alternative in the Community – AIC Program)

Opportunity Overview: This is a robust internship opportunity specifically designed for Criminal Justice majors seeking to fulfill requirements to complete their Undergraduate degree. The intern will gain practical, hands-on experience by working within Wheeler Clinic’s Alternative in the Community (AIC) program.

Program and Intern Responsibilities/Exposure: The AIC program offers comprehensive community-based intervention services to adults who are involved with the criminal justice system, specifically those referred by the Office of Adult Probation, the court, or parole. The program’s core objective is to reduce clients’ future involvement in the justice system by addressing their needs through an evidence-based, curriculum-driven model.

As an intern with the AIC program, you will be exposed to and potentially assist with a wide array of critical services, including:
Substance use intervention: Providing support and resources for individuals struggling with substance use.
Trauma groups: Participating in or supporting groups focused on healing from trauma.
Skill building: Assisting clients in developing essential life, coping, and social skills.
Job development and placement: Supporting efforts to help clients find and secure employment.
Case management: Learning about and potentially assisting with the coordination of services and individualized support for clients.
Educational, basic needs and vocational supports: Connecting clients with resources for education, essential living needs (e.g., housing, food), and vocational training opportunities.
Gender-responsive programming: Understanding and potentially contributing to services tailored to the specific needs and experiences of different genders.

Geographic Service Area: The program serves adults residing in or referred from the following towns: Berlin, Bristol, Burlington, Cheshire, Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Haddam, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Meriden, Middlefield, Middletown, New Britain, Newington, Old Saybrook, Plainville, Plymouth, Portland, Prospect, Rocky Hill, Simsbury, Southington, Wallingford, Westbrook, and Wethersfield.
