Wheeler Clinic is an organization that provides Alternative in the Community (AIC) programs. These programs offer community-based intervention services for adults who are involved with the court or probation. The AIC program utilizes a curriculum-driven, evidence-based model focused on assessing individual needs and reducing their involvement in the criminal justice system.

Services provided by Wheeler Clinic’s AIC program include:
• Substance use intervention
• Trauma groups
• Skill building
• Employment Skills Group
• Case management
• Educational, basic needs, and vocational supports
• Gender-responsive programming

The program serves adults in New Britain, Bristol, Meriden, and Middletown. Clients are referred by the Office of Adult Probation, the court, or parole.

Job Description, Detailed

This is an internship opportunity primarily aimed at Criminal Justice majors who are seeking a robust practical experience to fulfill the requirements for their Undergraduate degree.

The intern will work directly with Wheeler Clinic’s Alternative in the Community (AIC) program. This involves contributing to and observing the delivery of community-based intervention services for adults who are involved with the criminal justice system (referred by probation, court, or parole).

While the specific daily tasks are not detailed, the intern can expect to gain exposure to and potentially assist with various aspects of the AIC program’s services, which include:
• Supporting substance use intervention efforts.
• Assisting with or observing trauma groups.
• Learning about and potentially contributing to skill-building initiatives.
• Participating in or supporting the Employment Skills Group.
• Understanding the principles and practices of case management.
• Gaining insight into providing educational, basic needs, and vocational supports to adult clients.
• Observing and learning about gender-responsive programming.

The internship will provide practical experience within an evidence-based framework designed to assess needs and reduce recidivism among adults in the criminal justice system. The work is focused on serving adults in the New Britain, Bristol, Meriden, and Middletown areas.
