Job Title: Creative Arts Therapy Intern (Limited Permit)

Department: Therapeutic Recreation Department

Overall Role Summary:
The Creative Arts Therapy Intern is responsible for leading both clinical and recreational group activities, specifically tailored to the diverse needs and abilities of residents. This role primarily utilizes creative arts therapy interventions to foster emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being, extending to the provision of end-of-life care. The intern operates under limited permit supervision and actively contributes to the development and execution of special programs, educational initiatives, and broader departmental goals, ensuring adherence to regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities and Performance Standards:
• Conduct comprehensive initial assessments upon a resident’s admission.
• Complete an initial patient profile within 7 days of admission and an individualized care plan within 10 days, as directed by the Director of Recreation.
• Participate in interdisciplinary care plan meetings, providing clinical observations and therapy goals that align with person-centered care plans.
• Continuously monitor resident progress and recommend necessary adjustments to care plans.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including daily participation records, progress notes, interdisciplinary care plans, and quarterly evaluations, in accordance with facility policies.
• Engage in quality improvement activities pertinent to the recreation department.
• Clearly identify and document residents’ primary physical, psychosocial, or spiritual needs through interviews and clinical observation.
• Maintain strict confidentiality of all resident, patient, and family information.
• Effectively elicit and/or reflect the current primary physical, psychosocial, or spiritual concerns of the patient/family through interviews and observation of non-verbal indicators.
• Utilize effective counseling skills, including open-ended questions, empathetic listening, reflecting/re-phrasing responses, and validation of appropriate thoughts, feelings & behaviors, to gather assessment information.
• Demonstrate a compassionate and non-judgmental attitude towards resident problems.
• Incorporate and document discipline-specific interventions into the overall plan-of-care goals, with ongoing updates as needed.

Qualifications:
Education: Master’s or doctoral degree in Creative Arts Therapy from a program registered by the New York State Education Department as licensure-qualifying or deemed substantially equivalent.
Licensure: Must be eligible for a limited permit (CAT-P) in New York State.
Experience:
• Prior clinical internship experience in a healthcare, mental health, or community setting as part of a Creative Arts Therapy graduate program is required.
• Experience with older adults or in long-term care is preferred but not required.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet applications, and electronic medical records systems.
Professional Affiliation (Preferred): Active membership in a relevant national creative arts therapy association (e.g., AATA, ADTA, NADTA) is strongly preferred.
