Position Summary

Mesabi Metallics is excited to offer a dynamic opportunity for a Corporate Communications and Public Relations Intern to provide essential support to both our Corporate Communications and Government Affairs teams throughout the summer. This position provides unparalleled hands-on experience across corporate communications, public relations, and government affairs, with a crucial focus on building and strengthening our brand identity and awareness as the company progresses towards the commercial operations of its project in summer 2026.

As an intern, you will gain invaluable insights into the intricacies of corporate communications and public relations, the complexities of the mining industry, and the dynamics of regional economic development. You will play a direct role in contributing to the growth of Mesabi Metallics’ brand presence and enhancing our public engagement efforts.

Key Responsibilities

The Corporate Communications and Public Relations Intern will undertake a variety of engaging and impactful responsibilities, including:

Social Media Management:

  • Strategically curate compelling content for the “Build Mesabi. Build Itasca!” social media platforms (Facebook and Instagram), ensuring consistent, engaging posts that authentically reflect the organization’s values and mission in support of Mesabi Metallics.
  • Proactively monitor social media engagement, professionally respond to inquiries and comments, and meticulously track performance metrics to optimize reach and impact.
  • Actively assist in expanding engagement and reach on Mesabi Metallics’ corporate social media accounts (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and Instagram) by thoughtfully engaging with key partner organizations such as the Hibbing Chamber of Commerce, Hibbing Youth Baseball, Swan Lake Country Club, and others.

Communications Support:

  • Provide diligent assistance in drafting and refining both internal and external communications, encompassing a wide range of materials including: impactful press releases, insightful op-eds, persuasive letters to the editor, informative internal newsletters, and comprehensive materials for community outreach initiatives.
  • Take a leadership role in public relations event planning efforts, including seamless coordination with diverse stakeholder groups, meticulous preparation of event materials, proactive management of press outreach, hands-on logistical support on-site, and efficient management of crucial follow-up tasks such as sending thank you notes or preparing leadership briefings.

Government Relations Support:

  • Help prepare essential communication materials, including personalized thank you notes, comprehensive briefings, informative fact sheets, and clear talking points for effective government relations outreach.
  • Actively support stakeholder communication efforts and enthusiastically participate in outreach activities directed at local communities and government representatives.

Additional Duties:

  • Participate actively in team meetings to gain a deep understanding of strategic objectives and to collaborate effectively on various initiatives.
  • Assist with essential administrative tasks and ad-hoc projects as needed, such as meticulously cleaning press databases and organizing media clips for easy access.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Marketing, Graphic Design, or a closely related field.
  • Possess strong, demonstrable written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity and practical experience with major social media platforms (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram).
  • Proven ability to work independently, efficiently manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • A genuine interest in public relations, government affairs, and the dynamic mining industry.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Previous experience in communications, public relations, social media management, or digital marketing is highly desirable.
  • Basic graphic design skills, ideally with experience in Adobe Creative Suite or Canva.

Education

Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Marketing, Graphic Design, or a related field is required.
