PROCESS IMPROVEMENT ANALYST SKILLBRDIGE INTERN | Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII

The Tone:
This is an unpaid internship at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), located in Newport News, VA. NNS, a division of HII, is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, proudly employing over 25,000 individuals, many of whom are multi-generational shipbuilders. The company is the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers, and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines, collaborating at the forefront of technology to create the world’s most powerful naval ships. This internship, offered through the Hire Vets Now (HVN) SkillBridge Program, provides a vital opportunity for transitioning active-duty US military personnel to gain real-world experience in the workforce during their final 180 days of service. Interns train on meaningful projects, work closely with mentors and senior company leadership, and gain experience in roles that align with their military background, potentially leading to a full-time, regular, and permanent position with Newport News Shipbuilding.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Define and Design Programs: Define and design continuous improvement programs, ensuring they are integrated vertically and horizontally across the organization.
• Project Strategy: Define improvement projects that are aligned with overall business strategies.
• Program Analysis & Implementation: Analyze improvement programs and their potential results, then implement these programs effectively.
• Team Development: Facilitate and coach various improvement teams.
• Performance & Governance: Establish and maintain performance metrics to measure program success, and install process excellence supports for governance, project reviews, communications, training, certifications, and rewards.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Active-duty US military personnel within their final 180 days of active-duty service, with applications accepted within the final 12 months.
• Experience: Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) gained through military training and previous assignments that are relevant to process improvement and can be readily applied within a shipbuilding industrial environment.
• Skills: Proven capability to define, design, and implement continuous improvement programs; strong analytical abilities for evaluating program effectiveness and potential results; aptitude for facilitating and coaching improvement teams; proficiency in establishing and maintaining performance metrics to measure program success.
• Bonus: Six-Sigma certification.
