Internship Overview: Advisory Consulting Internship
The AECOM Advisory Consulting Internship provides a valuable hands-on learning experience within an exciting, fast-paced consulting and advisory practice. This is a highly competitive opportunity for current students and recent graduates interested in pursuing careers in economic analysis, economic development, real estate, urban planning, public policy, and/or data science.
Interns will work alongside other interns, junior staff, and senior managers, contributing to projects that address challenges and opportunities related to:
- Equitable economic development and growth
- Real estate development and repositioning
- Climate advisory services
- Economic diversification
- Other core practice areas
The program fosters both technical and professional skill development, providing networking opportunities and enabling interns to contribute to meaningful projects that shape communities and the built environment.
Key Responsibilities
As a Consulting Services Intern, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Performing entry-level work on a variety of assignments, applying standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
- Following instructions to accomplish tasks assigned by senior staff.
- Meeting required schedules while producing quality work.
- Collecting data, conducting research, and organizing and synthesizing information for community-based, regional, and national clients.
- Exercising limited judgment on work details and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of methodology.
Project Examples
Interns will work on a diverse array of projects and efforts, which may cover:
- Market analysis
- Funding and financing strategy (including prioritizing incentives or evaluating value capture opportunities)
- Adaptive reuse studies
- Pro forma modeling to determine financial feasibility
- Economic and fiscal impact analysis
- Program/policy evaluation to address economic and demographic disparities
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Economics, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Finance, Business, Real Estate, Environmental Science, Climate and Sustainability, or a related field.
- Must have completed at least three years of study by the internship start date.
- Recent graduates with a bachelor’s degree are eligible if they were enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term and plan to continue with a master’s degree in the same or similar discipline after the internship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a master’s degree program in Economics, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Business, Real Estate, Finance, Environmental Science, Climate and Sustainability, or a related field.
- Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses related to economic and community development, equity, housing, public finance, and/or resilience.
- Experience building cashflow models in Excel for real estate development projects.
- Ability to think critically, analyze policy and regulations, and write effectively.
- Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Strong technical skills, including experience with one or more of the following software packages:
- ArcGIS and other spatial analysis tools
- Quantitative/statistical programs such as STATA, R, Python
- Data and analysis visualization
- Data sources such as Costar, EMSI, ESRI Business Analyst, BLS
- Economic impact modeling tools such as RIMS II, IMPLAN, REMI
Compensation & Benefits
The offered compensation rate for this position ranges from $25 to $33 per hour, based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location.
