Position Description:

This Intern position offers a unique opportunity to assist in daily supervised activities related to the development of a construction project. The role is designed to build foundational knowledge in various critical areas including construction management, business and project financial management, project safety protocols, subcontractor relationships, quality control, and project coordination and lifecycle. Where applicable, this assignment will support learning that contributes to earning educational credits.

Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities:

Depending on business need and location, the Intern/Co-Op will be supervised and assigned to work either at an active construction project site or within a department at a main office specializing in construction.

General Responsibilities:

  • Support project team with meeting coordination, material tracking, file management, document control, and progress reporting.
  • Comprehend and meticulously follow project site signage and supervisor instructions.
  • Provide regular progress reports to the supervisor and actively engage in learning about construction management.
  • Relate and apply knowledge acquired in the academic setting to real-world work activities.
  • Maintain professional relationships with employees, customers, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Actively participate in training sessions, meetings, and orientation programs.
  • Comply strictly with all safety protocols, follow safety expectations, and wear appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
  • Perform other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.

Assignment-Based Responsibilities (may be performed depending on assignment, with longer-term assignments offering more in-depth experience):

  • Assist with project start-up activities and provide support to the Project Engineer, Project Superintendent, and/or Project Manager.
  • Aid in the collection and review of information and approvals for processing shop drawings, submittals, and Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Assist with the preparation and distribution of information for contract requirements to appropriate parties.
  • Help with the preparation of estimates for changes in work from subcontractors.
  • Attend project site visits to observe and document construction field activities.
  • Assist with the preparation of and conduct correspondence and communication, as directed, with Architects, Engineers, vendors, and subcontractors concerning their assigned trades.
  • Assist with communication to Trades and subcontractors to understand and track job schedules.
  • Help monitor contractor compliance with Turner’s safety program, as directed.
  • Assist with the preparation of quantity take-offs and studies for project items using traditional or computer-aided programs, learning and discussing necessary project details.
  • Request and distribute subcontractor proposals relative to their scope of work to assemble proposals for the delivery system.
  • Assist with project close-out preparations.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Enrolled and actively pursuing a college or university accredited degree program or enrolled in a Co-op program. Recommended majors include, but are not limited to, Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or other related fields of study, with at minimum 1 year of completed education, and/or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Age Requirement: Must be 18 years of age to work at a construction project site.
  • Interest: Demonstrated desire to work in construction management and to learn about the construction industry.
  • Availability: Commitment to work standard business hours and overtime as determined by the assignment.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, including student leadership, volunteerism, or other community involvement.
  • Communication: Professional and clear verbal and written communication skills in the English language are required.
  • Literacy: Ability to read and comprehend written information.
  • Accountability: Assume personal and professional accountability for own actions and activities.
  • Attitude: Proactive, curious, and eager to learn and participate.
  • Work Style: Able to work independently with direction and supervision, and effectively within a team environment.
  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational skills with keen attention to detail.

Physical Demands:

The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands; talk; and hear. Regular mobility is required. Performance of duties may require the physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs, use construction personnel hoists, climb ladders, and navigate work areas under construction. Frequent computer monitor viewing and keyboard use are also necessary. Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel, both short and long distances, via various conveyances may be required, with work performed at on-site construction work sites and/or office locations. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Work Environment:

While performing duties, the employee may regularly work in an office setting where the noise level is usually quiet to moderate. Occasionally, the employee may work at a construction work site exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock. The noise in a construction work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is required to work in compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
