Position Description

The primary goals for interns are to:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the construction process.
  • Provide essential assistance to Field Engineers and Office Engineers in field operations and materials management.

This program serves as an extended evaluation period for both the intern and Hensel Phelps to assess suitability for a successful career post-graduation.

Position Qualifications

Candidates for this internship should possess:

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer software, including the Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel-based templates), Prolog, Primavera, and AutoDesk Suite.

Preferred candidates are those pursuing a 4-year degree in:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Construction Management

Essential Duties

The intern will be involved in a variety of critical tasks, including:

  • Subcontractor management.
  • Submittal review skills development.
  • RFI (Request for Information) development.
  • Layout and surveying activities.
  • Preparation of daily reports.
  • Quality control and active support of the company’s safety plan.

Physical Work Classification & Demands

This position is classified as Moderate Work, requiring the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The individual in this position will periodically engage in the following physical activities, with frequency varying by workflow and office activity:

  • Walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and finger/type.
  • Walking: Occasional movement within the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, and cabinets.
  • Operating Equipment: Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery such as calculators, copy machines, phones, and printers.
  • Communication: Frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders on various office administration topics.
  • Cognitive Demands: Constantly computes, analyzes, and conceptualizes mathematical calculations and formulas.
  • Sitting: Regularly sits in a stationary position in front of a computer screen.
  • Reading: Constantly reads written communications, mail submissions, blueprints, and takes/verifies field measurements.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights.
  • Balancing: Ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling, and to walk, stand, or crouch.
  • Stooping: Bending the body downward and forward from the waist.
  • Visual Acuity: Required for operating a vehicle as certified and appropriate.

Environmental Exposures:

  • Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures.
  • Frequently exposed to noisy environments and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
