Job Overview:
This temporary internship position is designed to support the Memphis Business Unit with the placement of summer interns or co-ops. The successful candidate will gain foundational knowledge in various aspects of construction management, business and project financial management, project safety protocols, subcontractor relationships, quality control, and project coordination and lifecycle. Specific assignments will depend on active work available during the internship period and will be finalized by July 2026. This role is ideal for students actively pursuing a degree at surrounding area schools where Turner has a campus presence and may support earning educational credits.
Position Description:
As a Construction Intern, you will assist in day-to-day supervised activities related to the development of a construction project. This hands-on experience will allow you to build crucial skills and understanding within the construction industry. You will be assigned to work either at an active construction project site or within a department at the main office, contributing to various construction specialties depending on business needs and location.
Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities:
- Support the project team with meeting coordination, material tracking, file management, document control, and progress reporting.
- Comprehend and follow project site signage and supervisor instructions as directed.
- Provide progress reports to your supervisor and maintain receptiveness to learning about construction management.
- Relate and apply knowledge acquired in academic settings to practical work activities.
- Maintain professional relationships with employees, customers, clients, and subcontractors.
- Actively participate in training, meetings, and orientation sessions.
- Comply with all safety protocols, follow safety expectations, and consistently wear appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
- Perform other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.
Based on assignment (longer-term assignments may gain more in-depth experience):
- Assist with project start-up activities and provide support to the Project Engineer, Project Superintendent, and/or Project Manager.
- Assist with the collection and review of information and approvals for processing shop drawings, submittals, and Requests for Information (RFIs).
- Assist with the preparation and distribution of information for contract requirements to appropriate parties.
- Assist with the preparation of estimates for changes in work from subcontractors.
- Attend project site visits to observe and document construction field activities.
- Assist with the preparation of and conduct correspondence and communication as directed to Architects, Engineers, vendors, and subcontractors in connection with performing their assigned trades.
- Assist with communication to Trades and subcontractors to understand and track job schedules.
- Assist with monitoring contractor compliance with Turner’s safety program, as directed.
- Assist with the preparation of quantity take-offs and studies for project items using either traditional or computer-aided programs, learning and discussing details necessary to complete the project.
- Request and distribute subcontractor proposals relative to their scope of work to assemble proposals for the delivery system.
- Assist with project close-out preparations.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled and actively pursuing a college or university accredited degree program or enrolled in a Co-op program.
- Recommended majors include, but are not limited to, Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or other related fields of study.
- Must have a minimum of 1 year of completed education, and/or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Must be 18 years of age to work at a construction project site.
- Demonstrates a strong desire to work in construction management and to learn about the construction industry.
- Commitment to work standard business hours and overtime as determined by assignment.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, including student leadership, volunteerism, or other community involvement.
- Possesses professional and clear verbal and written communication skills in the English language.
- Ability to read and comprehend written information.
- Assumes personal and professional accountability for own actions and activities.
- Proactive, curious, and eager to learn and participate.
- Able to work independently with direction and supervision, and effectively within a team environment.
- Exceptional organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
Physical Demands:
The role frequently requires sitting, using hands for objects/tools, reaching, talking, and hearing. Regular mobility is essential. The position may require physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs, use construction personnel hoists, climb ladders, and navigate work areas under construction. Frequent computer monitor viewing and keyboard use are required. Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel (short and long distances) via various conveyances may be required, with work performed at on-site construction work sites and/or office locations. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
Work Environment:
The work environment varies. The employee may regularly work in an office setting where the noise level is usually quiet to moderate. Occasionally, the employee may work at a construction work site, where they may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in a construction environment is usually moderate to loud. Employees are required to work in compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
