Position Description:

We are seeking a proactive and eager-to-learn individual to join our team as a Construction Intern. This role offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in the dynamic field of construction management. Under direct supervision, you will assist in day-to-day activities critical to the successful development and execution of various construction projects. This internship is designed to build your expertise across key areas, including project financial management, adherence to project safety protocols, effective subcontractor relationships, stringent quality control measures, and comprehensive project coordination throughout its lifecycle. Where applicable, this assignment is structured to support learning that aligns with and contributes to earning educational credits.

Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities:

Depending on the specific business needs and project location, the Intern/Co-Op will be supervised and assigned to work at an active construction project site or within a department at our main office, gaining exposure to one of our many construction specialties. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing comprehensive support to the project team, encompassing meeting coordination, meticulous material tracking, efficient file management, rigorous document control, and accurate progress reporting.
  • Developing a strong comprehension of, and diligently following, all project site signage and supervisor instructions as directed to ensure smooth operations and safety.
  • Preparing and submitting regular progress reports to your supervisor, demonstrating a keen receptiveness to learning and developing expertise in construction management principles.
  • Actively relating and applying knowledge acquired in your academic setting directly to real-world work activities, bridging theory with practical application.
  • Cultivating and maintaining professional relationships with employees, customers, clients, and subcontractors, fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Participating actively in all relevant training sessions, meetings, and orientation programs to enhance skills and understanding.
  • Strictly complying with all established safety protocols, consistently following safety expectations, and always wearing appropriate PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Performing other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the project.

Based on the specific assignment, longer-term engagements may provide more in-depth experience and exposure to the following activities:

  • Assisting with crucial project start-up activities and providing direct support to the Project Engineer, Project Superintendent, and/or Project Manager.
  • Aiding in the collection and diligent review of information and approvals necessary for processing shop drawings, submittals, and Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Supporting the preparation and distribution of vital information related to contract requirements to all appropriate parties involved.
  • Assisting with the preparation of accurate estimates for changes in work scope from subcontractors.
  • Attending project site visits to meticulously observe and document construction field activities, gaining practical insights.
  • Assisting with the preparation and conducting of correspondence and communication as directed, interacting with Architects, Engineers, vendors, and subcontractors in connection with their assigned trades.
  • Facilitating communication with various trades and subcontractors to understand and meticulously track job schedules.
  • Assisting with monitoring contractor compliance with Turner’s rigorous safety program, as directed by supervisors.
  • Aiding in the preparation of quantity take-offs and studies for project items using either traditional or computer-aided programs, actively learning and discussing necessary project details.
  • Requesting and distributing subcontractor proposals relevant to their scope of work to effectively assemble comprehensive proposals for the delivery system.
  • Assisting with essential project close-out preparations, ensuring a smooth transition upon project completion.

Qualifications:

To be considered for this exciting internship opportunity, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Education: Currently enrolled and actively pursuing a college or university accredited degree program, or enrolled in a Co-op program. Recommended majors include, but are not limited to, Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or other related fields of study. A minimum of 1 year of completed education, and/or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, is required.
  • Age Requirement: Must be 18 years of age or older to work at a construction project site, complying with all safety and legal regulations.
  • Passion for Construction: Demonstrate a strong desire to work in construction management and a genuine eagerness to learn about the complexities and intricacies of the construction industry.
  • Work Ethic: Possess a firm commitment to work standard business hours and be prepared for overtime as determined by the assignment’s requirements.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Exhibit strong interpersonal skills, evidenced through student leadership roles, volunteerism, or other community involvement that demonstrates teamwork and communication abilities.
  • Communication: Possess professional and clear verbal and written communication skills in the English language, essential for effective team collaboration and documentation.
  • Reading Comprehension: Ability to read and thoroughly comprehend written information, ensuring understanding of plans, specifications, and instructions.

The noise level in the construction work environment is usually moderate to loud.
