Job Description: Construction Engineering Internship Program
Austin Commercial is seeking interns for its Construction Engineering Internship Program, which was ranked as one of the Top 100 Internship Programs of 2024 by WayUp and Yello. This program offers intensive, real-world, hands-on jobsite experience directly from seasoned construction professionals at Austin’s commercial construction projects.
Types of Paid Internships Offered:
• Fall 2025: Paid internship program during the fall semester.
• Spring 2026: Paid internship program during the spring semester.
• Summer 2026: This is a paid 12-week full-time internship program running from Monday, May 18, 2026, through Friday, August 7, 2026.
Potential Locations for Interns:
• Texas: (Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston)
• Arizona: (Phoenix Area)
• Florida: (Orlando Area)
• Utah: (Salt Lake City Area)
As an intern, you will:
• Gain a hands-on, career-enhancing experience on heavy civil construction projects.

Duties (Project Intern):
Interns will be given the title of “Project Intern” and their duties may include:
• Processing submittals (reviewing, stamping, filing, distributing).
• Sending RFIs (Requests for Information) to architects and engineers.
• Maintaining and updating concrete, rebar, RFI, and plan logs.
• Resolving problems arising from plans and specifications.
• Establishing control points and lines using field instruments (level, theodolite, total station).
• Locating embeds in slabs and verifying their positions per approved shops.
• Assisting in locating openings in structures and establishing vertical control.
• Locating other miscellaneous field items (e.g., curbs, inlets).
• Documenting, updating, and distributing construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and samples.
• Aiding with Quality Control inspections utilizing BIM 360 field onsite.
• Verifying pre-pour checklists and proper formwork framing/shoring installation per approved shops.
• Participating in and assisting with weekly safety meetings, including writing meeting minutes.
• Leading project orientation and maintaining logs.
• Assisting with maintaining project look-ahead schedules.
• Assisting with trade contractor coordination and scheduling.
• Verifying proper construction techniques per plans and specifications, raising concerns, and following through until corrected.
• Maintaining city inspection records and walking with the Superintendent during inspections.
• Performing other miscellaneous duties as defined by the Project Manager or Superintendent.
Internship Structure and Terms:
• Interns will have a preliminary meeting with their supervisor to discuss goals, expectations, and desired outcomes.
• Upon completion, interns will be reviewed to communicate successes and learning outcomes.
• The supervisor will complete any necessary paperwork for the intern’s school or university.
• Interns are classified as Temporary employee-owners and are not eligible for vacation pay, holiday pay, or other benefits listed in Policy A-5.
• Temporary employee-owners are expected to adhere to the same policies and procedures as regular, full-time employee-owners.
• Interns are expected to work a regularly-scheduled workweek of 40 hours or more; overtime will be paid for hours exceeding 40 at one and one-half times the regular rate.
