Job Description: Computerized Graphic Designer (Sign Painter)
The Facilities Management Division within ISD is seeking an experienced Computerized Graphic Designer (Sign Painter). This role requires a strong understanding of graphic design software and applications, plotters, and other computerized design equipment. The successful candidate will create a variety of signage, including signs, banners, stencils, patterns, decals, and acrylic cut-outs.
Essential Job Functions:
• Designing, painting, and laying out signs and posters using graphic design software and plotters.
• Hand lettering of all types and styles, including shaded lettering and the use of gold, silver, and aluminum leaf.
• Preparing various surfaces (wood, metal, glass, concrete, stucco) for sign painting.
• Color matching and mixing paints and other materials.
• Stencil cutting and use in sign reproduction.
• Fabricating signs using reflective materials or pre-cut letters, applying self-adhesive sheeting to aluminum, and laminating completed signs.
• Estimating material needs and maintaining work records, including computerized work measurement and accounting systems.
• Working both in a shop and in the field.
• Driving to and from work sites.
• Silk screening signs and posters as needed.
• Lead paint removal/abatement as needed.
• Working from a swinging stage to paint signs on building sides as needed.
• Supervising subordinate workers in sign making and painting (as needed).
Requirements:
To qualify, applicants must have six years of sign painting experience, including surface preparation, design, layout, and gold/silver leaf lettering. This experience must include using computerized graphic design software and equipment, with one year at the journey-level. Journey-level experience means working independently with minimal mentorship in problem-solving, regulation research, and accurate procedure following. A valid California Class C Driver’s License is required. The physical requirements are classified as Class 3 – Moderate (frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds, occasional lifting of over 25 pounds, standing/walking most of the time with bending, stooping, etc.). Keen color perception is essential.
