The Samsung Design Innovation Center (SDIC) has launched a new Computational Design Lab, a dynamic initiative aimed at reinventing product design and manufacturing through advanced computational design, AI, and Machine Learning. Operating from two key global locations – Paris and San Francisco – this lab is dedicated to solving inspirational and complex design problems.

The lab’s mission includes:

  • Sparking creativity and optimizing design concepts.
  • Designing innovative products for both present and future needs.
  • Fostering collaboration between the two satellite offices.
  • Engaging with various internal teams worldwide to create globally-impacting designs by collecting data, developing models, and applying sophisticated computations.

Position Summary: Computational Designer Intern

We are seeking highly talented individuals from backgrounds such as computer science, mechanical engineering, mathematics, and/or creative technology to inject new energy into our design processes. The ideal candidate will be ready to contribute across all stages of product engineering design, encompassing:

  • Identifying unmet and latent user needs.
  • Discovering new design opportunities.
  • Designing novel product concepts.
  • Creatively applying technology to solve real user problems.
  • Creating radically new experiences that reimagine product interaction.

As a Computational Designer Intern, you should possess a strong understanding of product design and engineering methods. Your primary role will be to apply computational design principles to find optimal design solutions for specific requirements. You will collaborate with diverse talents to develop generative design models and algorithms, employing emergent design and simulation techniques to develop and validate designs. The ultimate goal is to derive human-centered, distinctive solutions.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop computer-graphics based pipelines for manipulating, transforming, and working with 3D meshes.
  • Develop algorithms for 3D mesh generation, specifically utilizing Machine Learning techniques.
  • Develop algorithms and pipelines for comprehensive 3D mesh analysis.

Required Skills

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a field related to Computer Graphics, Computational Design, Machine Learning, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Strong knowledge in numerical methods and practical experience working with 3D meshes.
  • A strong passion for innovation and creative prototype development.

Special Attributes (Highly Valued)

  • Deep understanding of geometry topology and parametric design.
  • Advanced proficiency in Grasshopper and Rhinoceros 8 (Blender and Houdini are a significant plus).
  • Programming skills in Python (JS/TS, C++, C# are a plus).
  • Proficiency in AI/ML data science skillsets (e.g., SCIKIT LEARN, PANDAS/SEABORN).
  • Experience working with 3D libraries such as Open3D, trimesh, vedo, Igl.
  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and mechanical engineering is a plus.
  • Understanding of product development lifecycle, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Deep design engineering process knowledge.
  • Possesses a hands-on approach, is flexible & agile, and comfortable experimenting with a fresh, original perspective.
  • Self-driven, willing to initiate novel project ideas and develop concepts from scratch.

Compensation

The hourly pay rate range for this role is $36—$48 USD. Individual rates depend on various factors including function, location, knowledge, skills, experience, education, and training. This position is part of a comprehensive compensation package, including annual bonus eligibility and generous benefits.
