Job Description – Communications Internship
This paid internship offers a unique opportunity for creative and passionate students interested in communications outreach and planning. As an AARP Tennessee team member, you’ll contribute to various projects and events aimed at improving the lives of older adults and building a better future for generations to come.
Responsibilities:
• Strategic Communications: Apply analytical and creative thinking to promote policy issues related to family caregiving, health and welfare, and retirement security.
• Team Collaboration: Participate in meetings, strategy discussions, and collaborate on communications tactics. Provide support for both in-person and remote events.
• Event Promotion: Enhance event participation by assisting with event marketing and promotion via social media and other platforms, highlighting AARP Tennessee’s work.
• Content Creation: Assist in drafting press releases, event advisories, editorials, and other materials for internal and external audiences.
• Social Media Management: Strengthen AARP TN’s social media presence by daily monitoring, posting, and engaging with followers.
• Video Production & Editing: Contribute to the planning, scripting, production, and editing of social media videos and content.
• Outreach & Media Relations: Engage in strategic communications outreach to internal and external audiences, including media relations.
• Design & Graphics: Design event/program fliers, graphics, and other materials.
Qualifications:
• Must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university (rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students) and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program.
• Pursuing a degree in communications, marketing, journalism, gerontology, political science, policy, or related fields.
• Strong self-starter and adaptable, with the ability to work under tight deadlines.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate project needs, and discern work priorities.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
• Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
• Familiarity with creating and editing videos and knowledge of multiple social media platforms is a plus.

• Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
• Hybrid work environment with Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions.
• Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.
Compensation and Benefits:
• hourly range of $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, $28 for Ph.D. candidates.
• Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
