This job posting is for a Communications Design Intern within Ascension’s Experience Research and Design team, specifically the Communications Design Team.

Internship Summary and Objective:
The Ascension Communications Design Internship Program aims to provide a hands-on learning opportunity for interns to gain “real world” communication design work experience, supporting healthcare workers and patients. The objective is to cultivate skills and competencies necessary for interns to grow into successful communications design professionals and potentially become Ascension associates.
Essential Functions (Responsibilities):
The Communications Design Intern will be involved in various tasks to develop their design, collaboration, and digital communications skills, including:
• Working with cross-functional teams using an Agile development model.
• Participating in team meetings and ceremonies.
• Supporting the creation of visual design assets such as presentation decks, infographics, event collateral, and internal communications materials.
• Helping to craft clear and compelling copy and visuals for digital product communications (e.g., internal websites, emails, digital guides).
• Assisting in the ideation and design of a wide range of communications, including software applications and storytelling.
• Participating in feedback discussions with users and internal stakeholders to refine concepts.
• Presenting designs for critique and feedback to stakeholders and fellow xRD (Experience Research & Design) members.
• Seeking feedback from other teammates (Design, Product, Development).
• Collaborating with the research and design team to conduct research using various methodologies like surveys, interviews, and usability testing.
• Partnering in synthesizing findings to identify and communicate insights and opportunities for improving digital experiences.
• Applying brand and editorial guidelines to ensure design consistency across deliverables.
• Working closely with cross-functional teams including marketers, developers, and content creators to ensure design solutions meet user needs and business objectives.
• Interns may also attend department meetings and hospital/healthcare site visits to understand information technology and its impact in healthcare.

Requirements:
• Education: High school diploma equivalency OR enrolled in an accredited program specific to the discipline is required.
• Additional Preferences:
• Recently graduated or current degree-seeking major working toward a certification, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in communications design, graphic design, interaction design, or a related degree with coursework in visual and written communications.
• Applicants in non-collegiate design programs and those with previous real-world experience will also be considered.
• Familiarity with visual communication tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Google Slides, and others.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Passion for design that simplifies and humanizes complex topics.
• Interest in storytelling, healthcare, UX writing, or digital product environments is a plus.
• A portfolio (school or personal work accepted) is required with the application.
• Detail-oriented with a proactive mindset.
• Open to feedback and eager to learn.
