Job Description: Communications and Community Outreach/Advocacy Intern (AARP Ohio)
The AARP Ohio Team is seeking a motivated intern to support their communications, marketing, public relations, volunteer recruitment/engagement, and event planning efforts statewide. This is a paid internship anticipated to begin in Spring 2025 and run through the end of the year. The internship offers hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities:
• Digital Content Creation: Create videos, social media posts, and other digital content for advocacy campaigns related to family caregiving, fraud prevention, and retirement security.
• Community Engagement Promotion: Promote local AARP community engagement events using various channels like email, social media, and earned media.
• Grassroots Organizing and Advocacy: Assist in grassroots organizing and advocacy efforts, particularly focusing on AARP Ohio’s livable communities work (housing, transportation, outdoor spaces and buildings).
• Community Event Representation: Work with staff and volunteers to represent AARP at community events (AARP-hosted or sponsored events, public meetings, or community gatherings).
• Volunteer Management: Collaborate with staff and volunteers to build strong volunteer teams and identify local projects to enhance AARP’s community presence.
• Community-Based Strategy Development: The intern will be guided in organizing a community-based strategy, from goal setting to sharing the results of their work. This includes experience in communications, community engagement, and local advocacy initiatives.
Qualifications:
• Pursuing a degree (or recent graduate) in communications, business, marketing, journalism, or a related field. Rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students are eligible. Recent graduates enrolled in continuing education programs are also considered.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in various software programs: Excel, Microsoft Teams, Canva, Adobe products, and PowerPoint.
• Strong work ethic: Self-starter, adaptable, and able to work under tight deadlines.
• Adherence to branding guidelines: Ability to follow AARP branding guidelines for visual and written content, with working knowledge of AP Style.
• Experience in event planning and volunteer engagement.
• Project management skills: Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate needs, and prioritize tasks.
• Interpersonal skills: Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
• Technical skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs. Familiarity with video creation/editing and multiple social media platforms is a plus.
Compensation and Benefits:
• hourly rate: $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, $28 for Ph.D. candidates.
• Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
Work Environment: Hybrid (AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work is limited to the United States and its territories).
