Program Overview:
Northwestern Mutual’s internship program provides college financial representatives with comprehensive guidance, strong connections, and a structured framework to build an integrated financial planning practice from the ground up. Interns, from diverse academic backgrounds and experiences, will begin establishing their financial planning practice by engaging with local and nationwide experts, accessing exclusive financial products, and leveraging the robust support of a Fortune 500 company. Key Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities:
This internship program is designed to mirror the full-time Financial Representative career path, enabling you to:
- Master prospecting and networking strategies to develop your business and client base.
- Formulate and execute a strategic business plan.
- Initiate contact with potential clients and schedule meetings to thoroughly understand their financial aspirations.
- Develop comprehensive financial plans and provide actionable, useful recommendations.
- Gain hands-on exposure to proprietary financial planning software platforms.
- Participate in weekly coaching, training, and professional development sessions.
- Obtain Risk Product State Licensing for Life, Accident, and Health insurance.
- Cultivate essential life skills that will open doors to future career opportunities.
As a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, you can expect a flexible schedule that accommodates your academic and personal life. The option to participate in the internship program year-round allows for continuous growth of your practice and ongoing support for achieving additional registrations and certifications such as the Series 6 & 63 or CFP®. Interns are inspired at local and national recognition events, gain access to leadership development programs, and collaborate with industry experts. A diverse range of resources is embedded within the company culture to ensure both personal and professional growth throughout the program. Eligible students demonstrating interest also have the opportunity to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role upon graduation.
Qualifications:
We are seeking candidates who are a strong fit for this dynamic internship. Ideal candidates will possess:
- Full-time student status; juniors and seniors are preferred.
- A strong entrepreneurial drive and a genuine curiosity for sales.
- Significant involvement on campus (e.g., leadership roles, athletics, campus organizations, student government).
- Exceptional time-management skills.
- A keen interest in financial literacy and various financial planning tools.
- Demonstrated business acumen and a desire to enhance critical thinking abilities.
Compensation & Benefits:
This program offers a robust compensation and benefits structure designed to reward performance and support professional development:
- Performance-based earnings and revenue (based on production as an Independent Contractor).
- Learning and Development Incentives (up to $1000/month, not inclusive of earned commissions).
- Productivity Bonuses.
- Comprehensive support for obtaining insurance licensing (Life, Health, Disability Income, Long-Term Care).
- Support for SIE, Series 6, and Series 63 registrations (eligibility required).

Important Note: Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representatives are Independent Contractors whose income is based on production. If offered to apply for approval of an intern contract to become a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, a national criminal background check is required. Should the background check results provide information which would not allow someone to work for Northwestern Mutual, approval to contract will be withdrawn.
Salary Range:
USD $500.00 – USD $1,000.00 /Month (this range likely refers to the Learning and Development Incentives, as earnings are performance-based).
