The College Financial Representative internship program at Northwestern Mutual provides aspiring professionals with comprehensive guidance, connection, and a robust framework for establishing an integrated financial planning practice. Responsibilities

This internship program is designed to mirror the full-time Financial Representative career path, offering practical experience in core business development and client service functions. Key responsibilities and learning opportunities include:

  • Learning and applying strategies for prospecting and networking to grow a personal business and client base.
  • Developing and executing a tailored business strategy.
  • Engaging with potential clients through calls and meetings to deeply understand their financial goals.
  • Preparing comprehensive financial plans and providing useful recommendations.
  • Gaining hands-on exposure to proprietary financial planning software platforms.
  • Participating in regular weekly coaching, training, and development meetings.
  • Working towards obtaining Risk Product State Licensing, including Life, Accident, and Health.
  • Cultivating essential life skills that will open doors to future career opportunities.

The program offers a flexible schedule to accommodate academic commitments and personal life. With the option for year-round participation, interns can continuously grow their practice and receive support for advanced registrations and certifications such as the Series 6 & 63 or CFP®. Interns are encouraged to find inspiration at local and national recognition events, gain access to leadership programs, and collaborate with industry experts. Northwestern Mutual’s culture provides diverse resources to ensure both personal and professional growth throughout the program. Eligible students also have the opportunity to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role upon graduation.

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student, with a preference for juniors and seniors.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial ambitions and a genuine curiosity for sales.
  • Highly involved in campus activities, such as being a leader, athlete, member of campus organizations, or student government.
  • Possesses excellent time-management skills.
  • A keen interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
  • Exhibits business savvy and a strong desire to enhance critical thinking abilities.

Salary Range

USD $500.00 – USD $1,000.00 /Yr.
