The internship mimics our full-time Financial Representative career, providing a realistic preview of the role. You’ll gain exposure to a client-centric approach, combining the expertise of financial professionals with personalized digital experiences and industry-leading products. Our tailored approach includes multiple financial strategies—insurance, investments, and annuities—designed to reinforce each other and keep clients on track.

You’ll also find diverse resources across our culture to ensure personal and professional growth. The program offers a flexible schedule to accommodate your academic commitments and allows for year-round participation, providing ongoing support for registrations and certifications like the Series 6 & 63 or CFP®. High-performing eligible students may also have the opportunity to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role upon graduation.

Key Responsibilities:

As a College Financial Representative Intern, you will:

  • Learn fundamental skills in prospecting and networking to build your business and client base.
  • Develop and execute a personal business strategy.
  • Proactively call on potential clients and set meetings to understand their financial goals.
  • Prepare comprehensive financial plans and offer useful recommendations.
  • Gain exposure to proprietary planning software platforms.
  • Actively participate in weekly coaching, training, and development meetings.
  • Work towards obtaining Risk Product State Licensing (Life, Accident, and Health).
  • Develop essential life skills that will create future career opportunities.

Qualifications:

We are looking for students who are:

  • A full-time student; juniors and seniors are preferred.
  • Possessing entrepreneurial ambitions and a genuine curiosity for sales.
  • Highly involved on campus (e.g., leader in student organizations, athlete, student government).
  • Demonstrating excellent time-management skills.
  • Showing a strong interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
  • Business savvy with a desire to increase critical thinking abilities.

Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representatives are Independent Contractors whose income is based on production. If offered to apply for approval of an intern contract, a national criminal background check is required. Should the background check results provide information that would not allow someone to work for Northwestern Mutual, approval to contract will be withdrawn.

Salary Range:

USD $500.00 – USD $1,000.00 /Yr. (This stated salary range likely refers to the learning and development incentives or a base stipend, as total compensation is performance-based and includes commissions and bonuses).
