Key Responsibilities
Our internship program closely mirrors our full-time Financial Representative career, providing a realistic and immersive experience where you will:

  • Learn how to prospect and network effectively to build your business and client base.
  • Develop and execute a strategic business plan.
  • Call on potential clients and schedule meetings to understand their financial goals.
  • Prepare comprehensive financial plans and offer useful recommendations.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to proprietary financial planning software platforms.
  • Engage in weekly coaching, training, and development meetings.
  • Receive support to obtain Risk Product State Licensing: Life, Accident, and Health.
  • Build essential life skills that create future career opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Full-time student status; juniors and seniors are preferred.
  • Entrepreneurial ambitions and a genuine curiosity for sales.
  • A history of high involvement on campus (e.g., leader, athlete, campus organizations, student government).
  • Excellent time-management skills.
  • A keen interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
  • Business savvy and a strong desire to enhance critical thinking abilities.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Performance-based earnings and revenue.
  • Learning and Development Incentives: Up to $1000/month (not inclusive of earned commissions).
  • Productivity Bonuses.
  • Support for Insurance Licensing: Life, Health, DI (Disability Insurance), LTC (Long Term Care).
  • Support for Registrations: SIE, Series 6, Series 63 (eligibility required).
  • Potential Base Stipend Range: USD $500.00 – USD $1,000.00 /Yr.

For income tax purposes, they are considered independent contractors, and for Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax purposes, they are “statutory employees.” If offered to apply for approval of an intern contract to become a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, a national criminal background check is required. Should the background check results provide information that would not allow someone to work for Northwestern Mutual, approval to contract will be withdrawn.
