The College Financial Representative internship program at Northwestern Mutual offers a unique opportunity for students to build an integrated financial planning practice from the ground up. Interns receive comprehensive guidance, connection, and a robust framework. Coming from diverse academic backgrounds, our college financial representatives begin to establish a financial planning practice supported by local and nationwide experts, exclusive financial products, and the extensive resources of a Fortune 500 company. This program is designed to help you build confidence, develop a professional network, and empower individuals to achieve financial freedom. Here, hard work is truly rewarded!

Key Responsibilities

Our internship program closely mirrors the full-time Financial Representative career, providing a practical, hands-on experience where you will:

Learn how to prospect and network effectively to build your business and client base.
Develop and execute on a strategic business plan.
Call on potential clients and set meetings to understand their unique financial goals.
Prepare comprehensive financial plans and offer useful, tailored recommendations.
Gain exposure to proprietary financial planning software platforms.
Engage in weekly coaching, training, and development meetings to continuously enhance your skills.
Receive support for Risk Product State Licensing: Life, Accident, and Health.
Build essential life skills that will create valuable future career opportunities.

Program Structure & Benefits

As a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, you can expect a flexible schedule designed to accommodate your life and academic commitments. With the option to participate in our internship program year-round, you can continue to grow your practice and receive support for advanced registrations and certifications such as the Series 6 & 63 or CFP®.

You’ll be inspired at local and national recognition events, gain access to valuable leadership programs, and collaborate with industry experts. Our culture fosters diverse resources to ensure both personal and professional growth throughout the program. Eligible students also have an exclusive opportunity to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role upon graduation.

Qualifications

Are you a fit for this dynamic internship? We are looking for candidates who are:

• A full-time student; juniors and seniors are preferred.
• Possess entrepreneurial ambitions and a curiosity for sales.
Highly involved on campus (e.g., leader, athlete, campus organizations, student government).
• Demonstrate excellent time-management skills.
• Have a strong interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
• Are business savvy with a desire to increase critical thinking abilities.

Compensation & Benefits

This internship offers a rewarding structure that includes:

Performance-based earnings and revenue.
Learning and Development Incentives (up to $1000/month, not inclusive of earned commissions).
Productivity Bonuses.
Support for insurance licensing (Life, Health, DI, LTC).
Support for SIE, Series 6, Series 63 registrations (eligibility required).

Salary Range: USD $500.00 – USD $1,000.00 /Yr.

If offered to apply for approval of an intern contract to become a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, a national criminal background check is required. Should the background check results provide information which would not allow someone to work for Northwestern Mutual, approval to contract will be withdrawn.
