The College Financial Representative internship program at Northwestern Mutual offers a unique opportunity for students to build an integrated financial planning practice from the ground up. Interns receive guidance, connection, and a structured framework to develop their skills. Coming from diverse academic backgrounds, participants will begin building a financial planning practice while engaging with local and nationwide experts, exclusive financial products, and the robust support of a Fortune 500 company. Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities:

This internship program is designed to mirror the full-time Financial Representative career path, providing hands-on experience and valuable skills:

  • Learn how to prospect and network effectively to build a business and client base.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive business strategy.
  • Proactively call on potential clients and set meetings to understand their financial goals.
  • Prepare detailed financial plans and offer useful, personalized recommendations.
  • Gain exposure to proprietary financial planning software platforms.
  • Engage in weekly coaching, training, and development meetings.
  • Receive support to obtain Risk Product State Licensing: Life, Accident, and Health.
  • Build essential life skills that create future career opportunities.

As a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, you can expect a flexible schedule that accommodates your life and academic commitments. The option to participate in the internship program year-round allows for continuous growth of your practice and ongoing support for obtaining registrations and certifications such as the Series 6 & 63 or CFP®. Interns are inspired at local and national recognition events, gain access to leadership programs, and collaborate with industry experts. A diverse range of resources across the company culture ensures personal and professional growth throughout the program. Eligible students demonstrating interest have the opportunity to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role upon graduation.

  • Full-time student; juniors and seniors are preferred.
  • Possesses entrepreneurial ambitions and a genuine curiosity for sales.
  • Highly involved on campus (e.g., leader, athlete, campus organizations, student government).
  • Demonstrates excellent time-management skills.
  • Holds an interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
  • Exhibits business savvy and a desire to increase critical thinking abilities.

Compensation & Benefits:

The program offers a compelling compensation structure and valuable benefits:

  • Performance-based earnings and revenue.
  • Learning and Development Incentives (up to $1000/month, not inclusive of earned commissions).

Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representatives are Independent Contractors whose income is based on production. If offered to apply for approval of an intern contract to become a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, a national criminal background check is required. Should the background check results provide information that would not allow someone to work for Northwestern Mutual, approval to contract will be withdrawn.

Salary Range:

USD $500.00 – USD $1,000.00 /Yr. (Performance-based earnings and incentives are additional)
