Key Responsibilities & Program Structure
The internship program is designed to closely mimic the full-time Financial Representative career, offering a hands-on and immersive learning experience:
- Learn effective prospecting and networking strategies to cultivate your business and client base.
- Develop and execute a personal business strategy.
- Call on potential clients and arrange meetings to comprehensively understand their financial goals.
- Prepare tailored financial plans and offer useful, actionable recommendations.
- Gain valuable exposure to proprietary planning software platforms.
- Actively engage in weekly coaching, training, and development meetings.
- Receive support for obtaining Risk Product State Licensing (Life, Accident, and Health).
- Build essential life skills that will create abundant future career opportunities.
As a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, you can expect a flexible schedule designed to work seamlessly around your academic life and classes. With the option to participate in our internship program year-round, you can continuously grow your practice and receive dedicated support for advanced registrations and certifications such as the Series 6 & 63 or CFP®. Eligible students, who demonstrate interest and strong performance, will have the invaluable opportunity to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role upon graduation.
Qualifications
Are you an ideal candidate for this internship?
- Currently a full-time student; juniors and seniors are preferred.
- Possess entrepreneurial ambitions and a genuine curiosity for sales.
- Highly involved on campus (e.g., leadership roles, athletics, campus organizations, student government).
- Demonstrate excellent time-management skills.
- Have a strong interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
- Exhibit business savvy and a desire to increase critical thinking abilities.
Compensation & Benefits
- Performance-based earnings and revenue.
- Learning and Development Incentives (up to $1000/month, not inclusive of earned commissions).
- Productivity Bonuses.
- Support for insurance licensing (Life, Health, Disability Income, Long-Term Care).
- Support for SIE, Series 6, Series 63 registrations (eligibility required).
Salary Range
USD $500.00 – USD $1,000.00 /Yr.

As such, they are considered independent contractors for income tax purposes, and a “statutory employee” for Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax purposes. Income for this role is based on production. If offered an intern contract, a national criminal background check is required; should the background check results provide information that would not allow someone to work for Northwestern Mutual, approval to contract will be withdrawn.
