Job Description: Co-op – Project Management (Engineering)
This co-op position at Amtrak offers the opportunity to learn foundational project management principles while making tangible contributions to major bridge projects within the rail industry. The role involves working under the supervision of a project/program manager and collaborating with various stakeholders, including department leaders, project/program managers, planning and business analysts, and functional leads.
Essential Functions:
• Technical Reviews: Performing technical reviews of design submittals (plans, calculations, specifications) to ensure compliance with design intent and project requirements. Reviewing safety site-specific work plans to ensure safe project construction and field activities.
• Cost & Change Management: Analyzing change orders, cost estimates, and invoices; preparing backup justification for submission to Procurement or for negotiations with contractors and/or design consultants.
• Safety & Audits: Performing safety audits and field oversight of contractors and other project construction-related activities. Supporting the project team with project status reporting, documentation, controls, and other processes to ensure compliance with audit requirements, department procedures, and enterprise standards.
• Documentation & Reporting: Creating and maintaining project documentation, including organization charts, distribution lists, project logs, schedules, requirements documents, budgets, and status reports.
• Stakeholder Coordination: Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders (customer service, operations, planning, real estate, engineering, transportation, local and state agencies, FRA, and other partners) to determine project needs and priorities.
• Invoice Processing: Reviewing and processing contractor and vendor invoices, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
• Project Logistics: Coordinating project logistics, including calendars, major events, meetings, and presentations/agendas.
• Schedule Development: Assisting in developing an integrated master schedule for the project using standard tools, working with construction managers, project directors, and other project controllers’ teams.
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
• Actively pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
• At least 3 years of completed undergraduate studies or senior status in Fall 2025 (minimum).
• Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Relevant work experience (internships/co-op, school jobs).
• Microsoft Office experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project).
• Driver’s License in good standing.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Compensation:
The hourly range is $17.50 – $35.00 per hour, based on factors such as school year and program of study. Paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges and one PTO day per academic year. The Summer 2025 program starts May 19th, but spring/summer positions may be considered.
