Job Description
Clinical Ethicist
The Clinical Ethicist is an active member of the ethics program at WellStar Health System. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to the professionalization of clinical ethics.
Responsibilities
• Respond to health system ethics consultation requests and conduct individual and team consults
• Analyze and improve ethics consultation methods
• Work closely with healthcare teams to familiarize them with the ethics consult service and build trust
• Develop and implement bedside “ethics rounding” within the health system
• Provide ongoing training, education, and evaluation of ethics consult service members
• Participate in ethics consultation service night and weekend coverage
• Review and revise system policies and guidelines related to the Ethics Program
• Assure local and system compliance with accreditation and agency standards pertaining to clinical ethics, organizational ethics, and research ethics
• Plan, deliver, and evaluate ethics education for healthcare providers, residents, students, and the community
• Conduct collaborative and independent ethics scholarship, and disseminate work through publication and presentations
• Develop, implement, and evaluate the Ethics Assessment Survey
• Contribute to the Evaluation of the Ethics Department, including the ethics consultation service for quality improvement
Qualifications
Education
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Master’s degree in ethics, law, social work, theology, or a related field required
• Doctorate or terminal degree in a related field preferred
Experience
• Minimum of 1 year experience working in a healthcare setting or system required
• Prior work performing clinical ethics consultation, education, and policy development preferred
• Minimum of 5 years of experience performing clinical ethics consultation preferred
Skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods involved in clinical ethics and clinical ethics consultation
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with all stakeholders in the healthcare system
• Ability to work with patients and their families in a respectful and collaborative manner
• Demonstrated experience in delivering ethics education programming
• Ability to travel to outpatient facilities within the WellStar service area
• Skilled in project management and team facilitation
