Climate Communications & Outreach Intern | City of Kenmore

The Tone:
This is an internship at City of Kenmore, located in Kenmore, WA. The City of Kenmore is actively working to implement environmental initiatives and achieve emissions reduction goals through its Climate Action Plan. This role offers a valuable opportunity for an intern to gain practical experience in climate action messaging, community outreach, and environmental education, directly contributing to the City’s important climate objectives.

• Team: Environmental Services | Reports to Climate Action Plan Manager
• Mission: This person supports the implementation of the City’s Climate Action Plan through communication and outreach efforts to help achieve emissions reduction goals.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft platforms (Windows, Teams, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)

What You’ll Actually Do
• Messaging: Develop and deliver climate action messaging tailored for diverse audiences and assist in creating short-form videos and engaging content.
• Engagement: Plan and staff community engagement events, such as tabling at farmers markets and City concerts, requiring occasional weekend availability.
• Social Media: Develop and schedule social media content on a range of climate and sustainability topics.
• Partnerships: Build and maintain relationships with community partners like schools and businesses to identify and develop areas of collaboration.
• Project Support: Assist in the planning and implementation of special projects, such as a Green Jobs Fair, and support the Climate Action Advisory Committee.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Undergraduate or Graduate student (2-year or 4-year program) pursuing a major in Communications, Environmental Science, Public Administration, or a similar field; must be 18 years of age.
• Experience: General knowledge of climate and sustainability issues; proficiency in Microsoft platforms (Windows, Teams, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint); valid Washington State Driver’s License with a good driving record for travel within Kenmore and King County.
• Skills: Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex climate topics to diverse audiences; strong ability to build positive relationships; proficiency in conducting research, summarizing findings, and presenting conclusions; excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; capability to work independently and as a team member.
